Is Yuzuru injured. To lose to Nathan by 40+ points in the GP Final and then to place third at nationals seems unbelievable--especially in a season where Shomo Uno (whom I love) couldn't seem to skate across the rink without falling.

I watched most of the Japanese Nationals and all in all the judging was very fair, i.e., no one was spared any underrotation calls and there wasn't even much, if any, Nationals inflation. Specifically, Yuzu's performance in the FS was messy and he was judged accordingly and very fairly for it.

Yuma Kagiyama is a rock star and I really wished that the Japanese Federation named him to the team for Montreal.

Your thoughts...

Maybe Hanyu is getting older?

His Birthday is in December, so technically yes. Hanyu had a pretty great Grand Prix before, and a great SP at nationals, so I don't think age has suddenly come into play within mere weeks.

If I remember correctly, he changed his jump layout for the GPF, adding a 4Lz now for a 5-quad program. Otherwise, he did a couple of ununsual but costly mistakes at the GPF.
A fall on the SP combo cost him roughly 5 Points in base value and 5 in GOE when he would normally score at least +3. Add that to his score of 97 and he would have been right there with Chen. In the LP again an unusual but costly 1A, which should probably have been his third combination (3A-3T?). Since it was his last jumping pass, there was no chance to put the combo somewhere else anymore. Another 13+GOE points gone. A < on the last part of a combo cost him another ~5+ in GOE.
Mistakes happened in the second half after most of the quads, so I do believe it was mostly tiredness after 5 quads.

Mistakes happen, especially when including new elements, and Hanyu has always seemed to accept the risk of "bad" outings in order to include them in the repertoire. (his addition of 4S or 4L come to mind). With all the quads and the -5 to +5 GOE representing -50% to +%50 BV, quality and small mistakes can have huge impact on final scores - in both directions. With clean jump and average GOE on them he'd have scored 30-35 points more.

Yes, the FS at nationals was a mess, riddled with mistakes. And kudos to the federation for notably dinging him in PCS for it. But he had a fantastic SP. So I still think it was the results of shuffled elements and tiredness. I don't remember seeing him this winded after a FS in years. Hope he takes time to rest up for Worlds!

@Yuma Kagiyama: I saw him at the JGP and loved him immediately! So fluid and effortless over the ice!
