So who has the best info on cheap hotels or flights ?

When will the ticket sales start and what are the expected prices for an all around admission ?

Is there anyway to find a sponsor for a trip like that ? Cool

i'm so upset that both the GPF AND worlds are in the far east this year , So damn expensive ... Sad

Eladola, you really owe it to yourself to go. There is such a HUGE difference between live events and television. Speed, flow, ice coverage and sureness of movement are difficult to adequately judge on TV. TV keeps the skater in the centre of the picture which makes skaters with beautiful positions (Zhang, Cohen, etc.) look much better than they look live.

I was always an Irina fan but seeing her speed and effortless power live just blew me away. I wondered how she could ever lose. Then she skated tenatively and I understood how she could lose. Similarly Plushenko and Yagudin. Their speed and power put them in a whole different league to the rest of the skaters in 2002. Everyone else was skating for third. This is why I have never begrudged Plushenko his titles even though I find his programs just awful.

Too right there is. Last weekend I went to see the Imperial Ice Stars perform Swan Lake. It was my first time seeing skating live and it was truly amazing to see the jumps and complex lifts up close.
Eladola (or anyone) - going to a performance or competition is well worth the expense. Try to get good seats - I was right up the front so was able to get a really good look at everything.

I saw their Nutcracker on Ice, Kiwi, and we loved it. I don't like shows but I loved this one and will go again to any performance they bring to Toronto.

That said, their speed is very slow compared to competitive skating. The performance I saw was on a theatre stage on a small patch of artificial ice. There wasn't much room to get up to much speed and the skaters couldn't do jumps bigger than doubles because of the small ice surface.

The overall quality of the performance, the choreography, the costumes and the whole presentation was just stunning. We were just blown away by the whole show. Certainly comparable to the National Ballet production and a great treat for families.

Yes, they were on a 15 by 15 metre stage, so couldn't do the bigger jumps and throws. It was real ice though.
I think in another thread you talked about the good quality of their productions, and it was partly that which made me decide to go to this one. So thankyou for that, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Smile

Just couldn't resist joining this thread because I enjoy both live and TV coverage (Although of course I strongly prefer being there) since both have their advantages and disadvantages for me. While at the competition it's hard (For me at least) to guess why one skater scored higher than the other or why someone got scored so much higher or lower than expected or even whether a jump was a triple or quad. With the magic of TV recording and internet availibility of the very same event, many of the questions I had at the competition were explained without having to go to other sources to find out why MY assesment was so wrong. Wink

Even after watching events on TV and internet with slow motion and then looking at the protocols, sometimes it is hard to understand why someone got higher or lower that we think they should be. Very Happy

And yet live, I seldom disagree with the judges.

Case in point: Mirai Nagasu at Skate Canada last year. I was shocked to discover that people were outraged on the internet that Mirai had finished behind Laura Lepisto. I saw a girl who skated tentatively with not great speed and looked juniorish. Lepisto skated with much greater speed, flow, better ice coverage and sureness of movement. Her program sparkled.

As with Worlds, people only looked at the jumps and like Worlds, Lepisto didn't land as many jumps as Nagasu.

Toyko is completely out of the question for me at this point. London in 2013 is more than doable though. Free accommodations at Mom and Dad's house make it a cheap event regardless of ticket prices.

Eladora, there are always lots of posters from FSU, SkateFans, etc. there. Dinners, breakfasts and other meet ups are planned. It's always a party at these big events. Just follow the boards and check out the meet-up plans.

You can go with one of the tour companies but they are quite expensive. At least you'd have a group which will make it easier to meet people.

That is very true. My experience in Vancouver for the Olympics is truly unforgettable. But just goes to say, my brother who occasionnaly watches figure skating on TV was blown away by the pairs. He told me he has a new respect for figure skaters after seeing them live. It is also true that some skaters are much better live than on television. I had never understood the hype over Kavaguti\Smirnov before seeing them in person. I thought their short program was excellent in Vancouver. They had a quality in their skating that only S/Z, S/S and P/T had that night.

Nice, France.

Japan isn't too far away from NZ, and I'd love to go to Worlds, but I am rather broke at the moment, plus March is usually busy on the farm, so I don't think I could get the time off. So, unfortunately, I will just have to save harder and see if I can make it to any competition in a few years time.
