| ISU will release the assignments tomorrow morning at 9 am (European time). That's about 3 am New York time and midnight California time. |

Some reportedly 'retired' skaters are on the list:
Zaretskys - She was reported to have nixed future competition and Roman was looking for a new partner.
Zadorozhniuk / Verbillo and Beknazarova / Zuev - Anna Z has a chronic back injury which caused them to withdraw from Worlds after the CD. Vladimir Zuev has suffered with chronic injuries and was said to be retired. Supposedly Alla B and Sergei V were considering competing together.
Also surprised to see PLUSHENKO and WEIR on the list. |

I really hope that Weir is skating next season and at Skate Canada. I have never seen him live (or Lambiel either for that matter), and I really would love to have that opportunity.
But I'm happy with Oda, Rippon and Preaubert. Welcome home, Bobby!!! |

I'm surprised that Brodeur and Mattatall are still at it.
If 2 of the top 5 pairs from last year retire or break up, why can't we move the 6th and 7th 'up' to gain more experience? |

I'm surprised by the lack of Canadians at most events in general. Once again Canada gets shafted! Only Cynthia gets 2 assignments in ladies and only Patrick and Kevin in Mens!
Canada has beaten the US the last couple of years at Worlds ( and the Olympics) in Ladies and yet we get less than half the assignements. |

It was ROCHETTE who beat the US ladies at Worlds and Olympics, but Joannie won't compete in the GP; Phaneuf got her two assignments.
Flatt (JGPF medalist, JWC Champion, GP medalist), Nagasu (JGPF Champion, JW medalist), Wagner (2-time JW medalist, GP medalist), Zhang (3 time JW medalist, GP medalist), Czisny (GP medalist) and Zawadzki (JW medalist) have had more international success than Lacoste, Szmiett and Samson. It didn't help Samson that she failed to make the cut for the W2010 FS.
Amanda Dobbs beat Lacoste, Szmiett and Samson at 4CC, and she only got one assignment. The less successful US ladies (Gilles and Musademba) also got only one assignment. |

Um, Joannie didn't go to Worlds, so at Worlds it was Cynthia who beat the American girls and finished 5th thereby making her a seeded skater and ensure her two GP events next season.
So no, Cynthia didn't get Joannie's two spots: Cynthia earned her two spots on the basis of her skating. |

The reason some of the US ladies get 'more respect' than Canadian ladies (Rochette and Phaneuf excepted) is they have accomplished more internationally. GP invitations are based to some extent on reputation, and unfortunately, none of Lacoste, Szmiett and Samson have built strong competition resumes.
Anyway, Canada got two spots at Worlds 2010 because Joannie placed 2nd at Worlds 2009 (Phaneuf was 15th). |

No disagreement there, and quite frankly, other than Phaneuf and Rocketter, none of the other Canadian woman among those mentioned has a full slate of triples, and those they do have aren't that reliable. We're not in juniors anymore. GP spots are earned on the basis of points and performance. The Canadian girls have neither, hence no invitations.
I am more and more of the opinion that until Canadian girls start getting more competition at a younger age, we have no hope of competiting internationally. Skate Canada needs to ensure that there is a "final" in every competition for the girls starting at the Juvenile level.
At the lower levels, there aren't enough boys, pairs or dancers to make multiple flights so these three disciplines only every have one flight - they're always completing against the best available. The winners of the flights in the women's event need the additional challenge of going up against each other so a champion is declared in each event. |
