Sorry that I haven't been able to report these results in a timely fashion, but my big desktop computer fizzled out on Wednesday, then the internet went down on Thursday. I am forced to use my laptop, which doesn't have the results reporting format I use, so I had to do a new one from scratch for this competition. I won't have my desktop back until a week from today.

Can't help wondering what the Russian Fed is going to make of this.

Ironic that Konstantinova, who had the worst finish at Worlds 2018, is the top age-eligible skater.
IMO, Konstantinova was overscored in TES and PCS, and Samodurova underscored in PCS.
Medvedeva had the top FS score of all the age-eligible skaters.

Zagitova had a meltdown---was she spooked by Scherbakova's score (she skated 16th after Scherbakova and Konstantinova)?

Hi,

Fantastic and probably the most powerful championship in the history of Russia and even the USSR in the Pairs and the Ladies. I was mostly pleased with the highest level of almost ALL the pairs. Did you watch the competition? It is worth seeing, in my mind!

Team for the European Championship is determined by the sports principle.
Women: Stanislava Konstantinova, Alina Zagitova, Sofia Samodurova
Subs: Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, Evgenia Medvedeva

I would actually give Alina some rest after the tough half of the season and give her spot to Liza Tuktamysheva if Liza is recovered by the time the Euros starts.

I was able to watch most of the FS events.

MEN
I'll just say that the Russian Fed ought to invest some time in a make over for Alexander Samarin. Right now, it's his jumps (which are actually pretty well done when he hits them) or nothing, but he's got some tools that aren't being utilized to their full potential. When they're used to their full potential, I think Samarin can make a bigger impact. His speed, line, and posture are decent (better than Kovtun's, IMO), but he needs better choreography and packaging to highlight those along w/his jumps. Alexei Urmanov comes to my mind -- not necessarily for Samarin to emulate Urmanov's style, but more to have someone help him pay attention to musicality, etc.

PAIRS
I watched the entire pairs free skate, and yes, it was a treat to watch. All talk is w/the depth of Russian ladies, but RUS has got some depth in pairs too! I think all of these teams are worth investing in development. Pavluchenko & Khodykyn and Mishina & Galiamov, in particular, are on the cusp.

Boikova & Koslovskii are my absolute faves of the Russian pairs. I think they've got all the ingredients to become the next great Russian pair. In terms of overall look, I don't think they have the long, lean line of their teammates currently ranked ahead of them, but I think they've got charisma and personality; they skate big and all out. This team is still age eligible for Jr. Worlds, but I'm pegging them as potential medallists at Europeans!

Tarasova & Morozov had to follow Boikova & Koslovskii's boisterous performance, but they skated a knockout performance of their own. It was softer sell, more sophisticated, and delivered w/a maturity that is reflective of their experience. When they're on, you can really appreciate their impeccable line -- just classic Soviet pairs skating, if you will!

Kudos to Zabijako & Enbert for having to follow 2 stellar FS, but they put out their own personal best FS, from what I remember, complete w/clean sbs 3Salchows. Having said that, I don't really find anything memorable about this team. They don't have quite the same line and flow of Tarasova & Morozov nor the dynamism of Boikova & Koslovskii. Nonetheless, RUS will have a strong trio for Euros & Worlds.

LADIES
Yet another reminder that one RUS wunderkid can be the hottest ticket one season and then just one season later she's old news. Think about it: the reigning Olympic gold and silver medallists were outjumped and, IMO, even outperformed by two 14-year-olds armed w/quad Lutzes! Unreal! The judges called the three medallists correctly here. If I were Kostornaia though, I'd work on unleashing that 3Axel she's been working on at Jr. Worlds.

So, among the age eligible:

Konstantinova -- to be honest, I don't quite understand why the judges seem to have such a knack for her. To me, her stroking is labored, her posture is bent over, her jumps look a lot more telegraphed than anyone else's. Half a dozen of her countrygirls can match her jump for jump and probably do so more consistently and w/better presentation, but somehow, some way, Konstantinova gets the love. I agree that I would've at least had Samodurova ahead.

Zagitova -- word around the water cooler is that she may have been competing while injured, but you also had to think that Scherbakova's performance spooked her further. There was nothing there. Clearly, the judges were desperately PCSing her onto a World Team position.

Medvedeva -- Well, her season is likely over and the jury will still be out on whether Orser can help Medvedeva reach the top position again. She seems to have positive outlook on the whole situation, so that can't hurt.

I was surprised not to see Elena Radionova's name on the list ... does anyone know why she wasn't there? Injured? Or failed to qualify?

Yes, she had been injured, therefore she withdraw from the past Gran-Pri competitions and the Nationals. I am not sure if she is going to resume competing next season.

Brian Orser is all wrong for Evgenia Medvedeva. She has gone from almost unbeatable to failing to make the Russian National team.
Medvedeva didn't need a majour overhaul.
Have a beautiful day,

I think you're wrong Mike. All of Eteri's students have technical deficiencies that eventually lead to their jumps failing them. We see it happening now with Zagitova.

I agree---The Russian superstars fade once they "have a mother's body", as Eteri puts it. Her training method doesn't take growth and maturity into consideration. That's why Lipnitskaia and Sotnikova disappeared after their wonder year, and it looks like Zagitova is gradually heading down that path to oblivion.

Evgenia Medvedeva wanted to have a career into the future---that's why she went to Orser.

Despite her problems and results this season, I think Medvedeva is vastly improved from when I last saw her at Skate Canada. She much faster, and covers the whole ice, not just skating around the centre. Not to mention the program is more mature. What she is having trouble adapting to is North American style choreography. But she's starting to get it. By next season, you'll be amazed.

I have not been a fan of Medvedeva in the past. I was holding my breath to see her reactions in the kiss and cry during the season, and I was very impressed with her reactions. She took the results with absolute grace, and seemed to have a relaxed but respectful realtionship with Orser. I am ready to reevaluate my opinion of her IF she abandons the shmaltzy story lines in her programs.

I'm not Medvedeva's biggest fan neither, but I agree w/everything Dragonlady stated. I think what exacerbates the whole notion that the move to Orser is the wrong one is because, for better or worse, RUS focuses on results, results, results among its ladies because their field is about a dozen ladies deep in potential Worlds contenders and there doesn't seem to be a slowing down of young, uberflexible colts. Medvedeva went from on top and seemingly unbeatable to yesterday's news in the span of less than a year. The same sharp fall seems to have happened to just about all of her predecessors (Lipnitskaya, Radionova, etc., who were deemed the next thing. Zagitova isn't exactly killin' it out there, so wouldn't it be hilarious if they become training mates again...LOL...

Speaking of Zagitova: wow, another crushing loss and she was even the lowest ranking Russian lady in the FS. Is it safe to say that Sofia Samodurova secured her World ticket?? I can't imagine why RUS is willing to bet on Konstantinova again -- this is the 3rd ISU Championship in as many attempts that she botched a program and failed to medal. There's about a half dozen other RUS ladies who could've done better, IMO. I'm placing my money on the 2015 World Champion getting the ticket to Tokyo.

Among the RUS men: Samarin secured his Worlds ticket. I've said it before, but I think the Russian Fed ought to nurture him more and provide him w/better choreography. When he's on, his jumps are actually quite impressive. He's tall and could really benefit from someone working w/him to refine his line and extension.

I've read some angry reactions among Russia's skating community towards Kovtun's and Kolyada's poor FS performances to the extent that there's talk of yanking them off the Worlds Team. Not likely, IMO, especially w/Kolyada, who is also a reigning World medallist. As frustratingly unreliable Kolyada is in competition, he still scores well in an international field. Seriously, 140 points for that hot mess of a FS!

Samarin is a jumper with little or no charisma and limited presentation skills. Sure he will get the nod for Worlds, because he is also more consistent than the other Russian men. And consistency is very important, especially when it comes to Russian men. Kovtun's inconsistency was his eventual downfall. And now Kolyada's failure to win important medals threatens his place on the Russian World Team.

Kolyada was impressive when he finished 4th at Worlds 2016 because he had technical and presentation skills, as well as personal charisma. Then came the pressure on him in the 2017-18 season to increase his quad repertoire by adding 4z. Failures to land 4z led to unfortunate results: slipping from 4th at Worlds 2016 to 8th at Worlds 2017 and 8th at the Olympics. At Worlds 2018, with Hanyu and Fernandez absent, Mikhail finally made it to the World podium. This past season, there weren't any 4z attempts in competition, but quad and 3a landings became increasingly iffy and his confidence seemed shaken. He didn't make the 2018-19 GPF because he was 4th in both GP events (he won GPF bronze in 2017-18).

The problem for the Russian fed (and luckily for Kolyada) it's hard to find a Russian man who can take Kolyada's place at Worlds. Lazukin and Aliev are more inconsistent than Kolyada: although Aliev won silver at Euros 2018 and was 7th at Worlds 2018, he has since developed his own quad problems; Lazukin bombed in the GP this season. Although Kovtun won Russian Nationals, he bombed at Euros even worse than Kolyada did.

There's always Voronov, but the Russian fed hasn't sent him to a major competition since 2015.

It seems that Mikhail cut his hand severely on his first fall in the Euros FS, which was so painful that he couldn't concentrate on the rest of the program. So he may be forgiven his Euros failure and sent on to Worlds.

Just saw this

World women's single team:

Sofya Samodurova
Alina Zagitova
Evgenia Medvedeva
Spare : Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, Stanislava Konstantinova

https://fsrussia.ru/news/4271-ispolkom- ... JZgyopWNwQ

Apparently, there was another competition, Russian Cup, to select between Medvedeva and Tuktamysheva, or make the selection of Medvedeva legit.
