The ice dance judging was problematic, yet again. Sinnitsina & Katsalapov were gifted with top levels on the TR sequences and a higher base tech mark than the French. Their skate was a mess of sloppy steps, balance checks and numerous errors all along the way, and yet they got positive GOE on every element. Like the rest of us didn't even see it happen.

Look at the judging panel and it makes perfect sense.

What sence does the above tech panel make?
Canadian federation has a history and habit of raising all sorts of protests. Why didn't they or anyone else raise any protest if there was an incorrect judging in the RD?

Re: 2018 GP #6 INTL de FRANCE 11/23-25 GRENOBLE FRA

Postby Jonas » Sat Nov 24, 2018 10:22 pm

I found a LIVE feed, so I was able to watch in real time sans Tara Lipinski commentary!

MEN:
Jason Brown -- I'm thrilled that he won the SP in the manner that he did in the sense that it validated the intent of the changes in the judging system. He was rightfully rewarded for the quality of the overall delivery of that SP. I'm not thrilled about his FS and there were missed jump passes to boot, but I thought it was a step up from Skate Canada.

My other notable from the men is Kevin Aymoz. I first really took a liking for his style at Skate Canada and it's nice to follow up w/another pair of imperfect, but solid efforts here. He's my pick among the French men for that ticket to Worlds.

LADIES:
If Bradie Tennell was a woman on a mission, it certainly didn't look like it during her FS performance. To me she just looked very relaxed and let her training do the skating. Very well done!

I wonder if that doubled Salchow cost Mai Mihara a ticket to the Grand Prix Final.

Kihira was nowhere near as magical as she was in NHK -- just one 3Axel attempt in her FS here and a clear carrot to boot. But good enough for the win here. Can't wait for her to take on Zagitova in Vancouver!

To me, Medvedeva looked the opposite of Tennell: she WAS a woman on a mission. I think after two solid skates from Mihara and Kihira, Medved had to have known what was at stake. I don't know if she was nervous, but she definitely looked like she was forcing it to happen -- and it just didn't. The opening flop, I suspect, might have intended to be a 2Axel-3loop combo that I know she's been working on. Dare I say that she might not even make the Russian team for Euros and Worlds later this season??

PAIRS:
James & Cipres: Doubled sbs Salchow by her and overall not as magical as Skate Canada, but good enough for the win here. Can't wait for their duel w/Tarasova & Morozov in Vancouver!

Kayne & O'Shea: surprise silver medal here. This is their first at a Grand Prix, I believe. Not too bad for US pairs this series -- three different teams medalling!

Boikova & Kozlovskii -- I wonder if they focused too much on pulling the upset win and what was at stake. But, I love this pair! BoikOzlovskii don't have the line of their top two Russian teammates; in particular, his posture is stooped over. However, what they lack in line, I think they make up for in natural charisma. I find this team much more engaging to watch that Tarasova & Morozov or Zabijako & Enbert.

Your thoughts...

I thought Bradie was bound and determined not to let her FS get away from her the way the SP did. She was smart to focus on the performance rather than on the technical details, and that's what worked for her. Maybe the problem with the SP is that it doesn't have a 'story' with which she can engage so she's left to worry about those three jumping passes.

I’m a bit heartbroken for Gilles&Poirier having been unlucky with their assignments and facing such tough competition at this stage already. Would’ve loved to see them in the final, their FS is soooo beautiful! Hoping for good performances and placement at worlds :)

I’m reading elsewhere online that Hanyu might pull out from the final due to leg injury. Should be very interesting between Uno and Chen in that case! And Brezina could snatch a surprise bronze <3

What sence does the above tech panel make?
Canadian federation has a history and habit of raising all sorts of protests. Why didn't they or anyone else raise any protest if there was an incorrect judging in the RD?

There's nothing to protest. But S&K were gifted with undeserved levels and not minused for obvious mistakes. I would have had them behind the Spanish.

I disagree that Gilles/Poirier were unlucky with their assignments and that was why they didn't make the GPF. Their first assignment was SKATE CANADA---home ice! Unfortunately, they bombed their RD there with a fall in the pattern dance. They got a very high mark for their FD at Skate Canada, but it couldn't make up for placing 6th in the RD. They should have won silver at Skate Canada, but because of the debacle in the RD, they had to settle for bronze---that is what took them out of the running for the GPF. If they had won silver at SC, even if they placed third at IDF, they would have made the final.

My reference was to the JUDGES, not the tech panel.

I still don't get what you are alluding to.

I see a judging panel where all competing nations with the exception of the LTU pair were present. No Asian nation, yes, but neither CHN nor JPN had a competitor either (are there other Asian nations with Dance teams? Sorry, if I forgot them).
There's two North American judges, five middle/west/south European ones and two more "eastern" ones with RUS and ISR. If you are trying to allude to favoritism based on geography, I'd imagine the panel might have been pro-P/C, if anything.

Also, S/K got good GOE over the entire panel of Judges, so what is the panel supposed to tell me?

It wasn't the judging panel I took issue with. It was the techical calls. S&K had the worst TR sequences of the top 5 teams but they were gifted with the highest levels, in addition to positive GOE on elements where they had balance checks and other difficulties. They are clearly getting a big push from the Russian federation, that IMO, it not in any way deserved.

Please note that I have no issues with Stepanova & Bukin's marks or placements all year. This is not my being opposed to a Russian team, but rather a team getting marks that are not reflecting their performance on the ice. As for chuckie's comments about the Canadians, I do agree that it was that fall at SC which set up P&P for their failure to make the GPF.

I had a busy weekend and I'm just watching the LP's today. So I'll reserve comments on the LP's until later, but I did want to say that Bradie Tennell makes new fans every time she sets foot on the ice. This girl is a worker! The overall improvement in her basic skating, expression and flow, is just amazing. She's won me over completely.
