Does the ISU seriously still call it "Ladies"? C'mon, it's 2018! Can we not say Women?

Honestly.

I find it surprising that Kevin Reynolds is continuing on. And shocked to see Gracie on this list.

And pickings are slim for Canada, feels like there aren't any sure medalists.

To the rest of the World, it's LADIES. Only in Canada is it "Women".

As for Canadian medal chances, why start out with glass-half-empty thoughts? Some of your countrymen on other boards are already predicting medals in all disciplines and the GPF in some.

Oh NO! Yusuru Hanyu again picked the Cup of Russia.
These crazy Japanese fans will sweep away all the tickets((( Last year I was able to find a ticket to the Short Programs only. On the rink I felt like I was in Asia - only Japanese around and a small handful of Russians.

I see quite a few surprising entries at the moment - I would not be surprised if we saw major adjustments:

MEN

Michal BREZINA
Alexei BYCHENKO
Sergei VORONOV
Alexander MAJOROV
Yuzuru HANYU
Kevin REYNOLDS
Denis TEN
Artur DMITRIEV

LADIES

Elena RADIONOVA
Elizaveta TUKTAMYSHEVA
Carolina KOSTNER
Gracie GOLD

PAIRS

Xiaoyu YU / Hao ZHANG
Deanna STELLATO / Nathan BARTHOLOMAY

DANCE
Madison CHOCK / Evan BATES

In the MEN list, I was expecting to see all of those guys retiring or taking a break (Hanyu); same for Gold and Kostner. I had my doubts on Tuk and Radionova, but I would be happy to see them sticking around. In pairs I think Zhang made his time. He skates with younger and younger partners, to the point of becoming embarrassing (IMO). He is a great skater, but I think his last matches were questionable at the very least. Stellato is a wonderful story, I just wonder how much she will be able to deliver. Chock/Bates - to me it looks as if they started a downward spiral. I have never been a fan of these two, but I would hate to see them going out on a bad note.

As a side note: I LOVE to see SPAIN bringing two dance teams, and amazing work from the Russians, who bring to the world stage new athletes season after season.

Well I never would have picked Finland as the replacement for the cup of china. That came as a total surprise.

I am in shock to see Kostner on here. I really thought she would retire. Perhaps the new rules emphasizing PCS and less so jumps, helped her decide to stay one more year?

I also thought Chen and Hanyu would take the GP season off, after a grueling Olympic year.

Happy to see Gold on here, hope she is training and ready for this season.

I’m really looking forward to see what impact World Junior Ice Dance Champions Anastasia Skoptcova/Kirill Aleshin (RUS) will have in the senior ice dance ranks.

Chuckie, are you implying that it should be Ladies? I'll buy into that once they start using the term "gentlemen." Until then, it's garbage and should be changed.

Am I correct or dreaming? In the audience at World's I swear I saw the same (presumably) Japanese spectators showing flags for more than their own skaters? If so, bravo! Is this a thing that I just never noticed before? When my daughter and I were at World's in DC, we sort of bonded with two Russian young women who seemed shy about rooting for their skaters, so we encouraged them and rooted along with them. It felt really good to be non-partisan. But then I've always had favorites among other countries skaters, and sometimes I have actively disliked our own American skaters.

Yes, I've sat next to some Japanese spectators who brought a box of flags and selected the right one to wave for each skater. I've also sat next to spectators who steadfastly refused to applaud for anyone except skaters from their own country. I actually felt sorry for them because they didn't seem to be having much of a good time (their skaters didn't do too well). It's always a good time to enjoy all the skaters!

"Women" might be appropriate if all the competitors were in the 18-and-up age range. But they are not---many senior skaters are 15 to 17 and some haven't even gone through puberty yet----they are girls, and simply putting on a pair of skates doesn't instantly transform them into women. That is why "Ladies" is the more appropriate designation. And I am not implying it, I am saying it, and so is the ISU, since that is the terminology they use for all their competitions. Canada is free to use any terminology it wants for its own competitions, but it can't demand that the rest of the world do the same. Seems to me Canada also uses the term "women" for junior and below skaters, and IMO, that is ludicrous.

Huh, so by your logic, Ladies can apply to a 14 year old girl but Women can't?

Congrats to the ISU and anyone else who thinks that makes sense, but I do not. And I'm proud of Canada for taking a more modern approach, using a term that isn't loaded by outdated associations of what a female should be and how they should behave. The rest of the world should do the same.

Also, there ARE mens skaters who technically not adults as well. What should they be called?

As for cheering for all skaters, I totally agree that it makes the sport more enjoyable. We should all cheer for good skating!

Gotta disagree with you about "ladies", bumphy. There's nothing inherently demeaning or insulting about the term "ladies". It's not a perjorative in any way, like some anachronistic terms that referred to certain racial or ethnic groups. And I think you have to be old enough to remember the 1960s or earlier to associate it with "outdated associations of what a female should be and how they should behave". Those perceptions have changed, I think.

There's no need to throw out a perfectly good word just because it USED to be associated with old-fashioned attitudes. Most people use "women" and "ladies" interchangeably today. To refer to someone as a "lady" is simply polite. "That lady over there was next in line." I routinely address my high-school students collectively as "ladies and gentlemen". I think it inspires a certain standard of behavior and maturity that "boys and girls" does not.

The game of women's golf hasn't given up the term "ladies" either -- it's still the LPGA. And nobody's accusing female golfers of being subject to men, or of conforming to old-fashioned expectations of feminine behavior.

I am SO tired of political correctness being applied willy-nilly to everything.
In figure skating, the terms LADIES, MEN, PAIRS, ICE DANCE are labels that signify separate and distinct disciplines, period. They are not meant to have any meaning other than that. Apparently in Canada offense is taken at the label "Ladies", so that has been changed in Canada. However, there has apparently been no global offense taken, so the ISU hasn't changed its label, and even the political-offense-oversensitive US hasn't objected to it either, so no change here.

I am thrilled about Finland. I lived there for a short while ages ago, and maybe this time around I will manage to visit again AND watch some skating. Helsinki provided top notch events in the past, so I have all the trust in them.

I meant to say would have never predicted Finland. It is an interesting choice that came as a surprise since they have no elite level skaters at the moment. Finland obviously has a proven record to host world championship caliber level competitions.
