I had a foreboding feeling when Nathan Chen took the ice, and right away he went down, then failed to do a combo, and stepped out of the 3a. Just for a second I thought he wasn't going to make the cut for the FS. Nathan had to have heard Hanyu's SP score and instead of stirring his competitive spirit, it seems as if it made him give up.

Kolyada was next to do his usual bomb performance, but he got his usual sky-high PCS scores to hold him up. That won't help him much, because his FS is usually even worse for him than his SP. Aliev is sure to be the top OAR finisher at these Olympics. Dmitri is no match for Uno, Fernandez, Hanyu or Jin, but he easily beat Kolyada at Euros and will almost certainly beat him in Korea.

At least Adam and Vincent are in the next-to-last group and both have a chance to finish top 10.

With Nathan out of the medals, I am rooting for Hanyu to repeat as the OGM champion. His SP was exquisite.

I have to point out here how impressed I was with the pairs' level of sportsmanship after the event, in particular Meaghan Duhamel, who embraced Aljiona and told her "you did it!".

Meaghan Duhamel is truly the epitome of a classy athlete and a fine example for all others. She clearly just LOVES skating (did you see her reaction to Mirai's 3A in the team event? Priceless!) and will leave a real void when she retires after this competition. Luckily she has set an outstanding example for the younger skaters coming up. To see them win this bronze is a moment of the Olympics for me.

And Aljiona herself...what more can be said than she. is. a. LEGEND. Just a spectacular skate and so nice to see her with her long-coveted Olympic gold after so many tries.

I also have to say: my heart breaks for Nathan Chen. He is so clearly a talented skater, but I guess he just found that the Olympics are a different kind of pressure. He is so young, and I'm buoyed by the fact that he'll have another shot in four years. Two things: I've seen reports on Twitter that he has an injury and am hoping it's just conjecture and not fact. Anyone know? Also curious if people think he will relocate to a different coach? Does he need a fresh start to leave this behind him? Fingers crossed he finds some peace and redemption in the free program.

I can't decide if I want Hanyu or Fernandez to win the OGM. So great to see them both bring it in the short, each with programs for the ages in such different styles.

I think even a deaf man could've heard the applause for Yuzu! I was watching the live webcast (again sans Tara Lipinski!) and it showed Raf and Nathan walking towards the ice as it was raining pooh bears for Yuzu. I wouldn't say Nathan gave up, but I think it did make him go into panic mode and lose his focus. The commentator mentioned that she never saw Nathan warming up 4Lutz during his SP run-throughs, but he went for it anyway. Surely, it had to have been a competitor's last-minute decision to rack up as many points that, in retrospect, proved to be a foolish decision. I think a more experienced competitor, i.e., Javi, would've stuck to his guns, but I can also remember what it's like to be 18 years old, stubborn, immature, etc...

Nathan went down badly, but he did so fighting.

I do hope that any injury rumors are just that: rumors.

Well we all know that Ashley and Adam are besties and training mates. While I can see Ashley skating to this program, I think Adam has been more SASSY this season and this program fits his SASS to a tee! :P

I didn't see his SP, but yeah I saw that the reigning Olympic bronze medallist didn't make the cut for the free skate. :( The injuries just kept coming to Denis one after another during this Olympiad all the while the men's field has been far exceeding the Sochi standard.

While I am hoping for Yuzuru to win gold again, I also want Javier to win a medal, as this is his last chance to do it.

I think the podium will be Yuzuru, Javier and Shoma; not sure about the order.

I'd love to see Chan skate the program of his life and bust his way onto the podium, but I don't expect it to happen.

Virginia wrote:Ellen, your comments about Duhamel and Radford are rude, and they say much more about you and your nationalistic priorities than about this fine pair.

I described how I see them skating. Nothing nationalistic. English is not my native language so I apologyze if something sounds rude.
They came to ice after Aliona and Bruno. In contrast to Aliona's program it was clearly visible how poorly DR looked in terms of choreography.  Slow, it seemed like I was watching a slow-motion filming, unclear what the program was about, there was no connection with the music. This applies to their former programs, not only this one.
Pair skating is not about the parallel jumps, it is more about the program filled with with the pair elements.
Again, it is my personal opinion.

Virginia wrote:Tarasova and Morozov, by comparison, have one world bronze medal, two Europeans golds and a silver in the Olympic team event. Their outstanding contribution to pairs skating? I can't really think of any, to be honest. They seem pretty average except for unusual -- one might even say bizarre -- taste in music and costumes.

Tarasova-Morozov also won the GP Final a year ago.

Their free program this year is under rather fast music. A difficult task, this time they have not coped with it.
The fact that T/M dared to take such a fast music, speaks of their strengths and courage. In the future, they will make more successful free programs, if they continue to skate together.

Their SP under Rakhmaninov music was impressive. It will be remembered, a small input into the history of figure skating.

I am happy for ALiona very much.
I watched this touching video of Tatiana Tarasova hugging Aliona with tears on my eyes.

I sure hope Nathan is not becoming something of a DIVA and getting distracted with sudden fame so quickly. He wanted his own conference call with the media rather than doing one with the US team??? See article below:

http://www.espn.com/olympics/figureskat ... yeongchang

I’m also worried about Nathan’s Axel technique and that a master technical coach like Rafael Arutyunyan has not been able to correct this flawed jump. I don’t want him to end up like Patrick Chan and be cursed by that jump for the rest of his career.

The top five men were just sublime. I do not care for Jin’s PCS skills but that was the best I’ve ever seen him skate. Best I’ve seen Aliev skate too. I think Javi can still come back and beat Hanyu and win gold just like he did at the 2016 world championships. I’d prefer Javi win gold since Hanyu already has one.

I was so proud of Adam and yes Jonas he has enough sassy qualities in his skating to fill the entire arena. I sure hope he skates tonight’s free program like he did in the team event.

After his long program, all I remember are the jumps. It seemed like he just moved from one jump to the next, without any interesting transitions. Does anyone else have the same impression? I like him as a skater and hope that he can improve in his PCS.

I think one of the key skaters in 4 years will be Cha Junhwan - he could become the next Yuzuru Hanyu.

I have just finished watching live the Men FS. I could see only the last group, unfortunately. I am happy that three very complete skaters won: jumps, spins, steps, transitions, knees, interpretation and continuity were rewarded. My compliments to Hanyu, first double olympic champion in many decades, Uno, completing an historical double for Japan, and Fernandez, for bringing home the first medal for SPain in figure skating at the Olys

I've been thinking all season that the men's competition was going to be terrific. The free skate portion was out of this world. I am so relieved for Nathan! I have to admit that Uzura and Shomo deserved gold and silver. And I am so happy for Javier. He really did justice to his program. And good for Vincent as well.

Re: 2018 Pyeongchang KOREA WINTER OLYMPICS

There were a few questionable scores last night (I’m looking at you-the judges who gave 9s to Jin for interpretation and Kolyada for Performance) but overall I cannot complain about the results. In particular so happy for Javi finally getting his coveted Olympic medal.

So I guess if Nathan would have skated his normal short program that he delivered all season he would be the OGM. Props to him for winning the free skate though. I’m sure he learned a lot about himself from this competition.

Adam pulled off three perfectly clean programs this Olympics. What pride he must be leaving Pyeongchang with and a Olympic bronze medal to boot.

Another podium that feels very right! And it's funnily very similar to the one in pairs: the greatest old champion winning, the loveliest up-and-comer finishing second and the second greatest old champion taking the bronze. Brilliant!

I'm also happy that Hanyu won his second OGM with much better performances than the first one. It feels more right this way. :)

Now which of the podium finishers do you guys think will go to the worlds? Uno for sure but what about the "old champions"? I'm particularly curious about this because I have tickets for men's free (and free dance but that's a topic for Tuesday :D)!

Do you know if Elena Ilinykh is still competing and if she is, who is her partner? Thank you.

Elena Ilyinikh with the new partner Ruslan Zhiganshin did not achieve high results, eventually he finished skating, you know. Then she attempted to skate with another one, Anton Shibnev, but these attempts were not successful.
Looks like she's completely finished with the figure skating. Now she comments on Telesport chanel on Facebook together with Yulia Lipnitskaya and is going to do coaching.
But. Some figure skating fans spread rumors or just guess if she may return to ice in pair with Dima Soloviev after Katya Bobrova finishes her career this season.
