Jonas NBCSN showed almost all of the pairs. I suspect it may be like that for other events too. FYI

NBC-SN had US vs CAN Women's Hockey prelim, so I stuck w/the live webcast -- and refreshingly sans Tara Lipinski blabber!!

All in all, it was a very enjoyable event to watch. There were some costly and uncharacteristic meltdowns (Yu & Zhang) and some stellar skates.

Moore-Towers and Marino opened the pairs free skate with a really solid effort and set the tone for the rest of the field. Their teammates Seguin & Bilodeau one upped them in the second group with an even more solid skate, which by the end of the night would land them in the top 10.

Penultimate group provided a little teaser before the real battle for the medals later on even though all four pairs in the penultimate were in strking distance of the podium themselves. Marchei & Hotarek once again nailed a solid and personality filled performance. I've always enjoyed watching this pair, but something just really clicked with them here this week as I've never seen them skate better. I hope they can carry this over to Worlds in Milan -- and possibly flirt w/the idea of winning a World medal at home.

I gotta wonder how much that injury in mid to late December affected James & Cipres' preparation and psyche leading into Pyeongchang. They were really carrying the momentum over from last season's World Team Trophy to this Fall's internationals and were really setting themselves up for a legit medal contender. Then the injury reports happened and then they were dethroned from the Euros podium. 5th is a great finish for them, but I honestly thought Marchei & Hotarek beat them here today.

Final group: Savchenko & Massot LAID IT DOWN!! Their performance was everything, but I thought w/Massot's doubled Salchow from the short program, it was too little, too late.

Duhamel had a shaky and underrotated sbs 3Lutz, so I thought the bronze was sealed for the Germans. But then they rallied like World Champions and created their own moment. I know I harp about Duhamel not being this engaging performer, but I can't deny what a competitor she is. RESPECT! I'm beyond happy for them for having this whirlwind Olympic experience.

Sui & Han weren't quite as sharp tonight and I gotta think it was 2016 Worlds all over again for them. That single toe could haunt Song Han for a while, but if I know this pair and their coach, it'd only make them hungrier going forward.

Going into tonight, I thought to myself that Tarasova & Morozov would pull the mild upset win here. Everything seemed to be set up for this possibility until the two major flubs and no Russian pair on the Olympic pairs podium this year. Once again, this style mismatch is just exacerbated when the technical goods aren't delivered well.

Your thoughts...

I am pleased for Savchenko and Massot but I was really rooting for the Chinese. I'm glad the outcome is beyond question. Maybe they (the Chinese) will pull this program out at the next Olympics and do it full justice.

The pairs' podium felt so right! Well deserved rewards for the old champions Aliona Savchenko and Duhamel&Radford and a silver medal for the amazing Sui&Han to keep them hungry for the next 4 years. Perfect start for the individual events :)

Noticed Robin Szolkowy as one of the coaches for Tarasova/Morozov. How ironic that he was sitting next to the Russians while his former partner won gold. Wonder what he was feeling at that moment.

The Pairs podium was the best I could wish for.

I am also not the biggest fan of Marchei/Hotarek, but they had the 4th technical score of the competition, while scoring much lower on the PCS part.

Now, comparing the performance of Tarasova/Morozov and Marchei/Otarek, I do not see how the interpretation and performance of the Russians could be over 1 point superior to that of the Italians. Skating Skills, Composition, Transitions... almost nothing to say on the differences. But Performance and Interpretation - the Italians were superior. Vastly superior, in my book. Had proper PCS judging for the Russians been in place may not have changed the final standings, but it would have honored the sport.

That podium is perfect in so many ways. Savchenko gets her coveted OGM. The Wonderful Chinese get silver and are the current OGM favs for 2222 in their home country. The Canadians get an individual Olympic medal before they retire.

Jonas I swear NBCSN did switch to live skating right after hockey. They showed every couple but the first two in the penultimate group for some reason.

The NBCSN producer does need to tell Tara Lapinsky to stop talking over the music so much. I wanted to reach through the TV screen and tape her mouth shut! Who ever would have thought Johnny Weir would be the more reserved commentator on a broadcast team!

I agree Andy. The judges who gave Tar/Mor 9.5 and 9.75 for composition and interpretation make me laugh out loud. True they have amazing skating skills but that free program is an atrocity. One of the all time worst matches of skating style with music!

Andy, Tarasova /Morozov are in a different league. They are the pair of much higher class.

I do not agree and I never agreed with the high PCS for Duhamel-Redford. The presence of Lutz and a quadruple throw does not make their skate the 'natural' pair skating. They are two single skaters doing physical exercises on ice. They have no program, no choreography, no connection with music, no artistry. I do not understand the judges. D/R were stronger technically today. Even if they were given the marks for components that they deserve, they would probably still had been third. Therefore, I agree with the places on podium. But I (and many experts in figure skating) never agree with their marks for the program components.

Ellen, what on earth is a pair of "much higher class"? Since when do the judges evaluate the skaters' past performances over their performance on a given day when awarding the medal? I can see looking at the skaters' past performances when choosing the team, but surely once that is done, the skaters have to deliver the goods at the moment.

When it comes to SKATING SKILLS (SS), Tarasova / Morozov are first class, at least when they skate cleanly. But when it comes to PERFORMANCE skills (CO, IN), they are second class at best. Vladimir is expressionless all the time in both SP and FS and leaves the entire job of interpretation to Evgenia. It's no wonder she felt overwhelmed with the burden in the FS and failed on her first two elements while trying to express the character of the music. She rightly gave that up and stayed with concentrating on the tech so that the rest of the program was clean. So their CO and IN marks were hugely inflated and based on REPUTATION (their Euros performance), not what was performed on Olympic ice.

OTOH, Marchei and Hotarek are both excellent PERFORMERS and what they do on the ice perfectly represents the character of the music. The reaction of the crowd to their performance told how well they sold their characterization. Therefore, their CO and IN marks should have been higher than those of Tarasova and Morozov.

Ellen, your comments about Duhamel and Radford are rude, and they say much more about you and your nationalistic priorities than about this fine pair.

Duhamel and Radford have two world bronze medals, two world gold medals, two 4CC golds, gold and silver Olympic team medals and now an Olympic bronze medal in the individual event. Pretty noteworthy for a pair with "no program, no choreography, no connection with music, no artistry".

I found their free program very emotional, very connected to the music and very artistic. Tarasova and Morozov were lackluster by comparison.

Meghan's and Eric's contributions to the technical side of the sport are noteworthy. They are one of few pairs in history to attempt a quad throw, and were the first to land one cleanly at an Olympic Games. They are also one of few teams to do the side-by-size triple lutz -- in fact, Meghan and her previous partner were the first to land the them in competition. They have really pushed pair skating forward over the past four years. To dismiss them in the way you did, Ellen, is insulting and uncalled-for.

Tarasova and Morozov, by comparison, have one world bronze medal, two Europeans golds and a silver in the Olympic team event. Their outstanding contribution to pairs skating? I can't really think of any, to be honest. They seem pretty average except for unusual -- one might even say bizarre -- taste in music and costumes. I agree with Barcelona, Andy and Maleeva that their performance left a lot to be desired.

Most of us on this board appreciate fine skating no matter where it comes from, and specifically enjoy skaters from many countries. I rejoiced in the triumph of Savchenko and Massot (a Ukrainian and Frenchman skating for Germany), of the Chinese Sui and Han, and of Duhamel and Radford -- none of whom share my nationality. They were the three teams I hoped to see on the podium, in any order. All have proved themselves over the years -- five of the six skaters are world champions. All are worthy of medaling at the Olympics.

The only change I would have made to the judging is that I would have put James and Cipres 4th, and Tarasova/Morozov 5th. The French were on fire, even with their errors, while the Russian seemed lackluster.

Bravo, Virginia! The pairs competition and the results were great. And there are so many excellent men taking the ice tonight and tomorrow that I am sure I will be pleased with the outcome even if Nathan doesn't take gold. I think in my heart of hearts I'd most like to see Javier take gold. His long program could be glorious if he skates up to his potential.

Yes, yes, yes, thank you Virginia.

I was overjoyed that Aljona and Bruno skated so well and won.

Fortunately I was able to watch the entire event. North Koreans skated very well. So nice to see the joy the have for their sport, and the reaction of their part-time Canadian coach.

Men starting now, all 30 of them!

Got home right in time to catch Adam Rippon. He saved all of his jumping passes, but I honestly thought the overall performance here was even better than Nationals. He was just SASSY! :P His spins looked particularly good tonight too.

After winning silver at Euros, I was wondering whether Dmitri Aliev would replace his countryman Kolyada as the new dark horse at these games. Well: 4Lutz-3toe, 4toe, 3Axel, just shy of 100 points, and in the final group. Nuff said.

Chan fell on an underrotated 3Axel. We can all proclaim his sublime skating skills for days, but I found the rest of his performance to be flat and detached. I don't see any more fire and desire there. Simply and plainly he looks like he's just so over it. The only reason he's in the final flight is because both Nathan Chen and Kolyada tanked yet another performance this week.

Nathan Chen went from being THE Olympic gold medal favorite to the lowest finisher among the US trio after a disastrous SP. 17th place -- ouch -- lowest Olympic SP finish for a US singles skater since Nicole Bobek 20 years ago. You gotta wonder whether the pressure of expectation is starting to get to his head.

It's gonna be quite the battle among Hanyu, Fernandez, Uno, and Jin for those three spots on the podium.

Your thoughts...

Tell me if I'm imagining things. Midway thru Adam Rippon's SP today it struck me that he looked as though he were skating a program originally intended for Ashley Wagner.

Agree on everything, JOnas. And also I feel sooo bad for Denis Ten. In his prime he was one of my favourite skaters, and it just hurts to see him now. And well done to Rizzo, for sneaking into the finals, and to Hendricx, possiby the highest SP placement for a Belgias skater in many, many years
