2018 Pyeongchang KOREA WINTER OLYMPICS

Ha! Virginia I thought of you as soon as the event finished and perhaps was rethinking my comments from earlier today.

Also seeing reports of bad ice. But, most likely, it's nerves. Nathan looked nervous, which makes sense at his first Olympic games, and he has so much pressure on him to win. It ain't easy regardless of what time it is, right?

Okay, I'll give you the nerves. Probably a bigger factor than the hour, but still ... can't help!

Yikes! I hope Nathan worked the kinks out. I wish they had put Adam in the short and Nathan in the long--but who knows. He might have had nerves anyway. My daughter teaches speech classes at UVa and she said he sounded and looked exactly like her male students do when they are scared to speak in public.

I think it is mainly nerves. My absolutely personal take on the team event is that it is a pointless and meaningless competition. But since the federations must cope with it, they are using the team event to warm skaters up to the real deal. Have them get a taste of the ice, arena, audience, 'olympic fire', before the real competition starts.

In this very sense, I welcome the team event as a general rehearsal before the real show. For the rest, I would not make myself too busy about that, nor I would draw too many conclusions from it.

I think Nathan gave away the game re: team competition as a warm up when the words "actual competition" slipped out of his mouth. But I hope he isn't subconsciously telling himself that it doesn't matter. The actual competition is not far off!!!!

Considering that this absurdity was put in place in Sochi with the main idea of granting Plushy another medal, being it a three way toss between US, Canada and Russia, I am not surprised at all by Chen's words.

I am not the biggest Chen's fan, but I do hope he considers this a training and does not get psyched out by the mistakes made during the SP. I want him to arrive to the real deal rested, relaxed and focused, and not bothered by what happened or did not happen during a silly event

Ha ha ha, now I am with you:)

I guess if I had to take GRE at 10 p.m., no matter where in the world and taking a nap or not, it wouldn't be easy either.

Andy, I understand what you mean, that the individual events are still deemed more prestigious, but the team event is a real Olympic event, with real medals on the line. Hardly a silly event.

I think they should put the team event at the end of the games, not at the beginning. That way, there is no "saving themselves" for the individual events, and every participant is free to just go out there and give it their all. Not sure why this wasn't considered.

I agree Bump the team event should go after the individual events.

If the team competition is a "real" event with "real" medals, why don't the skaters or anyone else seem to think that way? We never hear Ashley Wagner, for instance, referred to as a bronze medalist except maybe once in a blue moon and, of course, it's always qualified as the "team" event to put it in its proper, lesser place.

Yeah right. It's on her Twitter account. It's on her Instagram account. It's mentioned every time she gets introduced. She loves being an Olympic Bronze medalist.

And change the scoring - the short programs are the competition at this point.

Maybe I'd better pay closer attention. All I recall is her constant harping on the one medal she doesn't have--Olympic. And I truly don't remember it being mentioned by anyone introducing her.

No worries. It usually depends on the competition, but it's definitely part of the skater introductions done during the warm-up. An Olympic medal is an Olympics medal, though the Team Event does create some odd ones - Kevin Reynolds, Marissa Castelli & Simon Shnapir to mention a few.

Re: 2018 Pyeongchang KOREA WINTER OLYMPICS

Postby Jonas » Wed Feb 14, 2018 4:09 pm

I'm going to make it a point to watch the live web stream tonight instead. NBC only showed the Knierims and bits and pieces of the last two groups.

Bronze medal position and 9th place are separated by a mere 2.82 points! Based on what I saw last night I tend to agree with that narrow spread. Personally, I would've even had Marchei & Hotarek and James & Cipres skating in the final group along w/Sui & Han and Tarasova & Morozov -- I really, really would! I'm sure someone will argue, and probably correctly, the relative inferiority of some of their individual pairs elements and/or that they skate slower. I'm sorry, but I didn't see that at all: to me, both of these teams PERFORMED and NAILED their elements better than the teams sitting in 3rd and 4th places. I think this is another case of the performance as a whole being greater than the sum of the technical elements and program components.

Savchenko & Massot's SP was actually the most disappointing performances for me last night. That program, when executed perfectly, is absolutely dynamite. Kudos to them for trying valiantly to sustain the performance, but a lot of the energy was zapped out since everyone knew that mistake was very, very costly. Sadly, their Olympic Gold Medal chances got flushed down the toilet in a matter of a second with Massot's doubled Salchow. I was really looking forward to them dueling w/Sui & Han for the big prize and having them come out victorious, but I think Savchenko is headed for a third Olympic bronze medal, at best.

Duhamel & Radford looked slow to me and their elements weren't exactly sharp: their sbs 3Lutz were way off synch and the throw 3Lutz had a clear touchdown of her second foot. I can't imagine how the judges could've missed those glitches. When they're not perfectly on technically, I think it exacerbates the fact that Duhamel is not a natural performer. Johnny Weir said as much. She executes the choreography, but it often comes across as contrived. They lack that natural charisma and ability to draw you in to their performance in the same way that Sui & Han have really learned to do or even how Marchei & Hotarek performed last night.

Your thoughts...

Duhamel/Radford have the same problem as Tarasova/Morozov: the lady has to be the "performer" of the pair as the man is the stoic non-performer, and neither Meagan nor Evgenia is an outstanding 'natural' performer.
