2018 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Fernandez ties Katarina Witt's resume of six European titles! Needless to say, he'll need to skate a LOT better than this in Pyeongchang to land on the podium.

I'm sad that Kolyada did not put up the challenge to Fernandez that I know he's capable of. I'm gonna guess the pressure of growing expectation plus skating at home got to him. Missed opprtunity, IMO. RE: his score -- it seems really high, but the protocol shows where he gained his points. He rightfully lost the points on the falls and pops, but the other passes rightfully gained the positives. Spins are pretty decent. He has good flow, nice, smooth edge quality, and decent speed. It was another case, for me, of the sum of the individual elements and components was greater than the whole. Not Kolyada's best -- his teammate Dmitri Aliev rightfully beat him hands down all around here, but in no way did Bychenko do the same as Ryan Bradley may have suggested.

Speaking of Dmitri Aliev --we can say now, in retrospect, that the Russian Federation made the right call in sending him here over Sergei Voronov, who's had a really strong season before Russian Nationals. His performances here show what a complete package in today's men's field can be: quads w/choreography and expression. Presuming Aliev is Pyeongchang bound, his Euros performances would beat, IMO, Zhou's and Rippon's San Jose performances.

Jonas I haven’t seen any evidence that this Skate would keep Fernandez off the podium at the Olympics. Other than Nathan Chen, who has skated like he wants it at every opportunity, none of the other men have been exactly stellar this season. Hanyu, iffy st the best of times, is coming off an injury, Chan seems disinterested. The young Russians aren’t ready for prime time, and other Japanese men have been inconsistent. The gold is Chen’s to lose st this point.

Yep Tara vs Michelle round two. Barring complete disaster from these two, the rest of the ladies are in a full out battle for the bronze. Carolina has the short program to compete with the top two Russians but not a free program.

Completely agree. Carolina has the best SP of the season, IMO, and if she goes clean with 3F-3T, I would put it (just barely) ahead of both clean Russian girls' SP's. Her skating skills and interpretation, for me, are enough to overcome the 10% bonus wave that Zagitova and Medvedeva are riding. However, I have never liked her current FS - I find it flat and not intriguing. And that green sparkly costume!! No ma'am. Wish she would just switch back to Bolero for the Olympics….even then, she doesn't have the technical firepower to hang with Alina and Evgenia in the free skate, but at least she'd score even higher on the PCS….

Dragonlady, I agree. Fernandez's LP has the potential to be his best ever so far as I am concerned. I can see why he may have saved it for the Olympics. It moves me to tears. The men's competition could be sublime if they all skate up to their abilities. Much as I'd like to see Chen take the gold for our country, I will be satisfied with Hanyu or Fernandez. And I'm a big fan of Shomo as well.

If my memory serves me well, Javi won the SP in Helsinki but finished 5th in the FS and was knocked off the podium. All in all, Javi skated a comparable FS in Helsinki to the FS he did here in Moscow: fell on his second 4Sal in Helsinki, tripled it here; doubled his 3flip in Helsinki, had it downgraded w/negative GOE here.

All three medallists in Helsinki nailed four quads each in their free skates!

Looking at this season Chen, Hanyu, and Uno are trying more quads and more difficult ones at that than Javi, so I think they can all botch a quad pass and still hold an advantage technically. I really do believe Javi needs to be pretty darn close to perfect, which I think he and Brian Orser also realize. Javi most certainly can't have his 3flip downgraded when Chen and Uno (and Vincent Zhou) are both trying 4flip.

Javi is still my favorite among the guys, so I'm rooting for him to nail it in Pyeongchang a-la-Boston '16!!

RE: Zagitova vs Medvedeva

Watching them skate one after the other, it was very clear to me that Zagitova was the winner. Her overall skating doesn't look as labored or muscled as Medvedeva's does. Zagitova's jumps are more difficult and she executes them better -- again, Medvedeva's jumps have always looked labored and carry very little speed out of them. Oh yeah, Medvedeva FLutzes! It was pretty clear change of edge, but she was spared the full edge call.

Anyway, yeah, it'll very likely be this duel for the gold in Pyeongchang. Twenty years after a 15-year-old Texan won in Nagano, 15-year-old Zagitova is poised to be the next Olympic Champion.

However, it's also worth reminding ourselves of this parallel: just four years ago, 15-year-old Julia Lipnitskaya beat her Russian teammate Adelina Sotnikova for the European title, then just brought the house down in the team event in Sochi, only to then crumble a little bit under pressure later that week.

I'm betting that the pressure is on Medvedeva and she will be the one to crumble. She's been reminding me more and more of Michelle Kwan with all the hype about her invincibility. I won't be a bit surprised if she joins Kwan and Slutskaya as world champs who couldn't get it done at the Olympics. I'm sure the spectre of that weighs heavy on her right about now.

And where was Lipnitskaia just two years later? Bitten by the puberty bug, that's where. That's still in Zagitova's future, as she's only 15 and nearly as tiny as Yulia was.

Posters are forgetting that Evgenia was off the ice for quite a while with a foot fracture leading up to Euros. It's no wonder her skating was a bit 'labored'. I suspect she may be a tad better prepared for the Olympics.

I was at the competition. I wanted Zhenya Medvedeva to win, and in my opinion, almost the whole hall wanted victory for Genya. Her skating brought to tears the two old ladies who were sitting next to me. Despite the success of the Russian girls there was a feeling of a little sadness. From the fact that Alina is very strong, and she can defeat Zhenya at the OIympics too, this will be a big injustice. Zhenya deserves the Olympic Gold more. Maybe thanks to Zhenya, thanks to her speech at the IOC session, Russian athletes were admitted as participants from Russia so that we could participate in team tournaments.
And it seems to me that her leg still hurts, but she hides that.

Yes. They could have skated to Aguilera, a violin symphony, a washing machine going through a centrifuge cycle. I could see close to no connection to the music, and no commitment. It was almost painful to see Tarasova trying to be sassy - but at least she tried. He had no emotional relationship to the music - and this turned out in a 9.36 for interpretation and a 9.43 for perfomance. Go figures! Once more, well done to the judges for showing how to properly use the CoP.

Tarasova/Morozov are the most unmusical of all the Russian pairs. They can carry off the SP because it is mercifully short. But their lack of connection to the music shows up in every FS, year after year. They are great technicians, and should score well in SS and PE, but their CO and IN scores should be significantly lower.

And I agree with Ellen that Evgenia Medvedeva is still feeling pain in her foot. Poor girl, she may lose that OGM to 2018's Tara Lipinski. But there's still 2022---who knows if Alina Z will still be around then.

Sorry, but I cringe whenever I see comments like this. Nobody deserves to win a competition before it has even started. Sporting events are supposed to be about a particular moment in time. I thought we were trying to get away from judging based on reputation.
