Re: 2018 RUSSIAN NATIONALS

Postby Ellen » Fri Dec 22, 2017 8:28 am

I was not able go to St.-Petersburg – the Year end, the hottest time at work.
But I watched a few performances in recording. The general impression is that our leaders did not look and did not skate as the leaders. Perhaps they have not had enough time for rest and recover from the GP Final in Japan.

In pairs Ksenia Stolbova looked somehow insecure, Zhenya Tarasova made many mistakes. To me the best pair yesterday (by the technic and in general) was the Zabiyako-Enbert. They, in my opinion, should have won the SP, but the current difference of one point between first and third places is also ok.
I personally wish Astakhova-Rogonov be the third Russian pair actually :).

In dance, I liked Zagorski-Gurreiro most of all. Very incendiary, and, by the way, they were above all in technic. And Sinitsina-Katsalapov also looked very interesting to me, but Vika did the mistake on twizzles, so they got not that much.

In men, Alexander Samarin jumps very well. However by the skating skills and in general Kolyada, of course, is much stronger, and he is the only one from the Russian men who can compete at the World level.

Looking forward to Ladies short program today.
Ellen

Thanks for the results chuckie and the reports Ellen. Wow what scores for the top two men and so many men did clean quads in their short. Very impressive.

The battle for the third pairs team is intense !

Well I kinda feel sorry for Voronov being fourth here after such a nice GP season. But I think the Russian federation does not name their Olympic team till after Europeans so perhaps he still has a chance? I don’t think he has ever been a favorite of the Russian judges.

I really thought Sin/Kat would challenge Step/Buck for the second spot on the dance team. Historically speaking, it is shocking Russia only has two spots in dance at the Olympics. Never thought I’d see the day that would happen but I’m sure they will have a third spot back soon, perhaps as soon as 2018 Milan.

Nikita must be devastated he will not return to the Olympics, as defending Bronze medalist. There were rumors that his former partner, Elena Ilinykh, might be at nationals with a new partner, but they are not listed. Ellen have you heard anything about that?

I think Voronov will have to be named to the European team ahead of Aliev first, if he's to be named to the Olympic team. There are only two spots for the Russian men, so it would seem likely that Kolyada is going no matter what and whoever finished next in the order at European's will probably get the 2nd spot.

I think this is the best I have ever seen Bob/Solo skate. I love the music and was truly touched by this performance.

Yikes that was a messy pairs free event. I have noticed that synchronized pairs spins have become a lost art in the world of pairs skating. I sure do miss those.

Sorry but I intensely dislike Tar/Mor’s free program music, so it is very difficult for me to appreciate their skating listening to that music.

The music is totally on unsuited to their personalities, Maleeva. It’s bright and sassy and they are precise and refined. She can pull off Grace Kelly, but not Marilyn Monroe. The music is unashedly sexy, and she’s so elegant.

I don't like T/M's FS either. In fact, I haven't liked any of their freeskates in the past 3 years. They have excellent skating skills, but they have zero personality on the ice (he is far worse than she), and when they try to do something that brings out personality, it falls flat. They'd be better off sticking to classical music, IMO.
This FS is especially bad when they skate after the Germans or the Chinese---it is groanworthy.

I really like Stanislava. I’ve never seen her skate before:

Alina Zagitova gave an Olympic Gold Medal caliber performance. Even if Medvedeva comes back, well, I’m not sure she can beat AZ. I think AZ has the better free program.

Radionova and Leonova? Yikes. I’m wondering if 10th and 15th place finishes here is a glimpse to the end of their successful careers?

I do hope that Medvedeva gets healthy enough for Europeans, so that we can watch a pre-Pyeongchang duel between her and training mate Zagitova. I concur that the Olympic gold will be very much between these two skaters from Russia. Neither is my favorite, but I'd be shocked if the 2018 Olympic Champion isn't one of these two.

Among the Russian wunderbabies, I think I like Kostornaia the best. She's a member of Eteri Tuberidze's stable, but her speed and ice coverage, IMO, is even better than either Medvedeva's or Zagitova's. Of course, we'll have to see what the puberty monster brings.

Speaking of puberty monster, just four years ago an age ineligible Radionova made such a splash in her senior debut, qualifying for the Grand Prix Final. She's won two European silvers and a World bronze two years later, but her body has blossomed into an attractive, more womanly body -- very attractive, but not necessarily ideal when you're competing against little pipsqueaks who can unleash triples with ease. She's still age eligible for this year's Jr. Worlds (not that she'd go this year), so I don't necessarily think her career is over unless she wants it to be. Her base technique is pretty solid, so if she can readjust to her body, I think she can still be competitive. I apply the same logic and have the same hope for Tuktamysheva and Pogorilaya. If Tuktamysheva continues to the next Olympiad, I suspect regaining a consistent 3Axel will be priority.

Leonova, I suspect, will retire through attrition. I have the most utmost respect for her as a competitor who doesn't give up, but she's clearly been passed technically. To be honest, I'm surprised she got two Grand Prix invites this season.

Your thoughts...

It's been reported that Aleksandr Samarin and Dmitri Aliev will join Kolyada as Russia's men's team for Euros. I'm not sure if this means that Voronov is now completely out of the running for Pyeongchang.

Stanislava has skated in the JGP before, and she competed this season in 3 Challenge events: she won two, beating Fedichkina and Tuktamysheva but lost to Sakhanovich. Her problem has been consistency---you never know if she's going to skate great or far from her best.

I strongly disagree about Zagitova. She’s a junior jumping bean and quite frankly, I’m tired of these young Russian girls with no power, junior level stroking, no depth of edge or decent ice coverage getting 9’s in skating skills, transitions or performance. The +2’s for small jumps with no ice coverage is ridiculous as well.

Judges need to be reminded that a 70 point technical score doesn’t mean the skater should get automatically get 70 plus for PCS unless their skating has the speed, flow and ice coverage at the very top of ability. Immature skating with shallow edges in the middle of the ice doesn’t meet that standard.

I don’t necessarily disagree with you dragonlady, but I was specifically referring to this program. Did you watch it? She performed it well and with musicality. She is able to listen to the music and actually interpret the choreography to the accents within the music. Many top level skaters amazingly do not have that skill. This was the first time I have ever really enjoyed one of her performances. I also appreciate her ability to center her spins. Here is the clip:

Yes I watched it and she is very musical, but the program is an abomination with the back loading and the hand over the head in every jump. I do find it difficult to watch these programs and do anything but roll my eyes at the construction or the scoring.

I like young Russian skaters but their programs are awful. That’s the fault of their coaches and choreographers, not the skaters. Often the themes are beyond their emotional range, like Medvedeva’s 9/11 program, and their ice coverage leaves a lot to be desired - both in terms of using the entire ice surface, and in height and distance on their jumps.
