Canada Is Bidding For Future Events

While Vancouver is definitely on my "To Visit List" I was secretly hoping for Eastern Canada! I've always wanted to visit Quebec City and I almost threw my financial cautions to the winds for the 2011-2012 Finals. I enjoyed Ottawa for Skate Canada '08 and have always wanted to go back. Maybe 2020 Worlds?!?!

Why doesn't the city of Winnipeg ever get to host skating events? I'd like to visit there.

this is the first Canadian GPF in the west coast. Any idea which stadium has been put forward? Doug Mitchell or Pacific Coliseum?

Good question!! It is a great city with lots of amenities to offer visitors. :D :D :D

I think there must be a lack of desire for the local skate clubs to put a bid together? I have no idea what the process is. The last time Canadians was held here was 2001 in the old arena.

FYI...Montreal (Laval, actually) is the Canadian city bidding for 2020 Worlds.

A little research revealed that a 10,000 seat arena is under construction in Laval, Quebec.
Architectural concept drawing looks very nice.

The 2018 Canadian championships are being held at a small rink in Vancouver (University of British Columbia campus).
Sure hope that isn't the rink planned for the GPF. Think it only seats about 5000. I have not been there, but it seems a poor location for a major international event.

I sure hope Canada gets the 2020 worlds because I'd like to go. I guess Laval is a suburb of Montreal? I would want to stay in Montreal so I hope that public transit drops you off close to the skating venue in Laval.

I thought Laval was in Quebec City not Montreal.

I went to a French immersion at the University of Laval and it was in QC, also a beautiful city.

Laval is a suburb on Montreal. It has a passionate skating community, much in the way that Illderton (outside of London, Ontario) does.

Should be interesting to see which city will get the 2020 Worlds!

It would interesting to know what makes countries that do not have current top level skaters bid for worlds. Croatia, Sweden and the Netherlands have not had elite level skaters in quite sometime. It just makes me wonder how well tickets would sell in those nations.

I'm sure France wants it badly to show off the dance team of P&G.

But since North America just hosted worlds in 2016, that may hurt the chances of Canada getting them four years after Boston.

University of Laval is in Quebec City but the City of Laval is a suburb of Montreal.

I don't think that Boston having the World Championships in 2016 will hurt Canada hosting in 2020. Both the US and Canada seem to host successful World Championship events and the ISU seems happy to have the event in North America at least several times a decade.

I hope for Montreal too! :D

Stockholm would be neat too. I have never been to Sweden and would like to go. I wonder if they have Girl with the dragon Tattoo tours?

Hosting worlds might give a boost to the sport and the athletes in the host country, I'd expect. Also, tickets don't need to be sold mainly in the host country itself, but there are a lot of other countries (some of them also with top level skaters) reachable within a 2-hour flight distance.

Anyway, I like the idea of federations without top level skaters hosting ISU Championships. The big 6 have a Grand Prix Event every year anyway, so local fans get the chance to watch at least some international top skaters live every year and local atheltes can get the exposure to the the big Events even if they are not top level (yet). For fans and athletes of other countries, it is more of a rare treat!

Gosh teenisfan that is a cool list. I never realized they were that close and it looks like they alternate between Canada and the US. Based on that list Canada seems to be the favorite because the ISU does not like to wait longer than four years for North America.

Thaliana your points are well taken!

Montreal (Laval) has the provisional 2020 Worlds allocation.
Quebec Section made the announcement and Skate Canada has too, although I'm told the latter was an unofficial announcement.

Quebec Section announced it will be at Bell Center which is in downtown Montreal while the one in Laval is Place Bell.
