Four Continents Championships, 15-19 Feb, Gangneung, S Korea

It's been a dull few weeks since Europeans. Time to kick off a thread for this event!

Usually we get a few withdrawals from 4CC by skaters who want to focus on Worlds -- especially North Americans who don't want to deal with flying the Pacific, as it nearly always seems to be held in Asia. I haven't heard of a single one this year, except for Miyahara with an injury. No doubt the fact that this is the Olympic test event has heightened interest in this event.

Things to look forward to: Can Chan take Hanyu? Will the international judges respect Wagner's maturity over Karen Chen's less developed style? Can the Canadian ladies challenge? Do any of the North American ladies have a chance against the Japanese? Can anyone besides the Americans or Canadians get near the podium in dance?

Thoughts?

Yes, most of the top names going to Worlds will be here, so this is actually going to be an interesting event! I'm just NOT staying up till the whee hours of the early morning to watch it live and unspoiled!

PAIRS:
I'm actually most interested in seeing the progress of the US teams. Can Denney & Frazier put out more solid skates right after their win at Nationals and before their Worlds debut. How competitive are the Knierims at this point? I predict Duhamel & Radford, Yu & Zhang, and Ilushechkina & Moscovitch to comprise the podium.

MEN:
Happy that I'll be able to watch the men's FS live! Chan has my favorite FS among the top men this season, but I think Hanyu and/or Nathan Chen will outjump him for the gold. I predict Hanyu, Chen, and Chan to comprise the podium. Aside from this I'm also going to keep an eye on Jason Brown and whether he's able to put out at least one clean quad before Worlds.

LADIES:
So, I won't get to see a duel between Miyahara and Osmond, but there are plenty of skaters looking to pounce on the opportunity to get a 4CC medal before Worlds. Mirai Nagasu's season ends here, so she ought to really aim and focus for another repeat medal. 4CC is one of the events the USFSA will consider in its body of work review for selection to the 2018 Olympic Team. I predict Osmond, Mihara, and Higuchi for the podium.

Your thoughts...

Virginia, Ashley is not competing. I presume she did not want to come?

I think Karen Chen has a chance at the podium if she skates like she did at nationals. I also think Shoma Uno is easily in the mix for the men's podium. And I'm sure Jin is looking forward to try and out jump his teen rival Chen!

If Sui and Han come back healthy they can win the pairs event. Duhamel and Radford are not invincible this season.

In dance this is Tessa and Scotts event to lose. What will facisnating to see is where the judges place Weaver and Poje against the three American teams. W&P are coming on strong and have a great shot at the podium.

Only able to watch the dance given the hours.

Too bad for W/P and P/G - they each made odd, uncharacteristic mistakes on their SDs. Better the mistakes here than in Helsinki.

Andrew's twizzle mistakes aren't unusual---they are almost expected. But Piper's misstep and fall were a bit of a shock. Paul couldn't even bring himself to look at her in the KnC.

I watched the second half of the ladies---it was far from inspiring. It seemed as if all the ladies were suffering from jet lag or competition nerves or both. The only really clean SP I saw was Lizabet Tursynbaeva's, and IMO she was underscored in PCS by the judges. From the protocol, Mai Mihara had a clean SP (no -GOE), but it was in the first half, so I didn't see it.

I concur w/Chuckie re: the ladies. It's been about three weeks since Canadian and US Nationals and a good two months after Japanese Nationals, so if everyone here wanted that warmup for Worlds, then I was expecting more clean, solid, and confident performances. Mai Mihara (whistle clean) and Gabby Daleman (had to fight for that sloppy 3Lutz) were really the only ones, IMO, who delivered in that regard, though I didn't watch Tursynbaeva's.

Wakaba Higuchi looked crappy in the practices and it carried over into her performance here. I'm almost wondering whether she's injured too.

Karen Chen reportedly got the flu, but the snarky devil's advocate in me would also point out that she's skated like that when she was healthy so... :(
She didn't look like a US Champion skating out there.

The pairs event was actually quite well skated. Sui & Han picked right back up even after they've been out all season w/injury. The Knierims look better than expected; in fact, probably just as well as any of their best short programs prior to her illness.

Your thoughts...

My lord Nathan beat his PB by almost 11 points! I have to admit it sure is nice having an American man who has a chance at the world podium after all these years. I'm Getting more hopeful he and Jason can get that third spot in Helsinki for the US men at the Olympics.

Virtue and Moir must be so pleased with their comeback. I never imagined they would dominate so quickly when they returned. The Shibs got some PB scores here but they still have a ways to go to catch V&M.

I'm not so hopeful about Jason. He fell on the 3a and his 3z was UR. Jason says he is healed, but he is clearly not in competition shape and there's only 6 weeks til Worlds. Stress fractures are tricky---they can recur if rigorous training is resumed too quickly. Seems to me there's no way Jason can get back his quad and practice 3a enough so that he can land it without URs or falls in such a short time. At 4CC, Jason is in 9th place after the SP, and there were 5 men at Euros with higher SP scores than his, and 3 more with slightly lower SP scores but very strong FSs. A quadless Jason with an iffy 3a would be unlikely to place top 10 at Worlds.

The thing about Tursynbaeva's jumps was that thought they were completed they were really tight landings with little run-out and the combination sort went back on itself.

Well, if Nathan wins Jason only needs to finish 12th, he he he.

That's a huge IF. Fernandez was far from his best at Euros and still scored 104.25 in the SP and 190.59 in the FS. You can't rely on Hanyu to make another big mistake at Worlds. Nathan has an excellent shot at a World medal, but gold is by no means guaranteed.

BTW, Vincent Zhou won the SP at the Bavarian Open today with a score of 85.53, including a clean 4S. The FS is on Sunday. Vincent is skating at the BO because he needs senior TES minimums (he is the first alternate for Worlds).

Since Jason is still nursing an injury and may not do well at 4 Cs, is there any chance USFS would make him do a test skate before sending him to Helsinki? Have they ever done that before? In his interviews he sounds very positive and says the injury is getting better as time passes.

I know Jason says the injury is getting better, but it's obvious that he is not in competition shape, and there isn't much time left before Worlds. "Getting better" says to me the injury is still there but not as bad as it was, and that also implies training has to be limited. Unfortunately, USFS can't make Jason withdraw, and it sounds as if he has no intention of doing so. If that means the US has only two men for 2018, it's very likely that Jason won't be one of them.
