That was quite some pairs' short! T/M were absolutely fantastic, flawless execution of some huge elements and great presentation. J/C had a skate of their lives and a well deserved second place with great technical content and an interesting and well presented theme. S/M were otherwise excellent but she fell on their step sequence which cost them the second place. S/K were good too, a little bit the same story as S/M with a fall on the throw jump. Their short this season is to Clair de Lune so it's much more lyrical than last season. Quite refreshing to see them doing that style but it obviously wasn't quite as much of a crowd-pleasing show as the top three skates.

Z/E were solid and probably deserved their 5th place but I was more entertained by M/H who also seemed to step up their game from anything I've seen from them before. The ones to watch in the future are the young Czechs now in 7th place. Very mature presentation with some lovely balletic touches and a technically solid skate. I got the feeling I was watching future European champions. :)

I agree that James & Cipres had the short program of the evening!! Innovative style and very well executed elements!! Personally I would've had them further ahead of Savchenko & Massot, Stolbova & Klimov, and Zabijako & Enbert.

Duskova & Bidar were the other revelation to me!! WOW!! They looked sluggish en route to their silver medal at the Jr. Grand Prix Final just last month. Here they looked polished and confident!Side by side jumps and throws were solid and the unison was pretty darn good! They didn't look very junior to me! Had it not been for that clumsy trip from him, they'd probably be ahead of Marchei & Hotarek, who I personally find very entertaining to watch.

Should be an exciting FS.

No real surprises in the ladies in terms of skating and placement. The Russian trio threw it down like any old day at the office. The only real suspenseful thing to watch for is whether Carolina Kostner can hold off Maria Sotskova for the bronze. Kostner has always been a judges' favorite, but Sotskova has an ambitious technical offering that I don't think Kostner can match anymore.

Kudos to Laurine Lecavelier of FRA and Ivett Toth of HUN for throwing down their own solid short programs!

Your thoughts...

Re: 2017 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Postby Virginia » Thu Jan 26, 2017 4:33 pm

I thought most of the ladies were quite lackluster, up to (but not including) the final group. One notable exception was the Hungarian girl, Toth, who had a lot of potential in my view.

I haven't gotten to watch the final pairs flight yet, but of the ones I've seen, the British couple rather stood out, along with Savchenko and Massot. The latter were clearly in an entirely different class than the rest.

Final random comment: can anybody explain the background to Kiss and Cry? It looks very industrial, but I can't work out if those are supposed to be oil derricks or a refinery or what? Certainly an unusual choice, yes?

The short dance results have been revised and now BobSolo are in first place. Anna and Luca received a one point deduction after the event was over.

How nine professionally trained judges could determine that Stolbova and Klimov had a better PCS "Performance" and "Interpretation of the Music" scores than James and Cipres, sometimes makes me question what I know about skating.

S&K skated like robots today (and I really do like this team). J&C gave the performance of their career and the crowd went nuts. The pairs best program I have seen this season by any team.

I also intensely disliked S&K's music. It does not help them.

Lastly, if someone could explain to me how Savchenko and Massot only received a level 3, not a 4, on their triple Twist, that would be most appreciated. It was spectacular. Tarasova and Morozov received the only level 4 triple twist in the whole event. I cannot see how it was better than S&M's triple twist.

Levels are based on features, not quality. For a L4, the girl has to have a hand over the head while spinning, and the boy has to slap his hands on his legs, I think.

Ugh, Tarasova & Morosov win again. Those two are a cure for insomnia. Lovely clean lines but no connection whatsoever. They manage to be duller than T&M, which is really stretch it. I much prefer the younger Russian team.

sorry, huh?

I don't understand how C/L can get this call now after performing the same short dance all season. Did they change something?

All in all a great pairs FS -- some really good skating and an enthusiastic Czech crowd!! Really made me wish I was there!!

It was great to see Duskova & Bidar skate so well in front of a home crowd. Skating juniors internationally, I thought they'd struggle with the additional 30 seconds, but nope. They were more solid here than they were at the Jr. Grand Prix Final. They should be favored to repeat as Jr. World Champs.

Marchei & Hotarek are always entertaining, but the judges preferred Zabijako & Enbert, who I found to be more dull. Had 5th and 6th been reversed, ITA would've been able to send 3 pairs again to Euros.

Stolbova & Klimov fell again on that throw 3flip -- and the life just go sucked out of the actual performance. I'm not sure if they gave up or not, but I concur that it was just robotic throughout. I want to and should enjoy watching this team more as they really have the technical goods to handle truly unique choreography AND be able to execute fully in a complete performance.

I'm glad Savchenko & Massot have 86'ed the throw 3Axel and throw quad, as they were never close to landing them. They probably should reincorporate throw 3flip and be rock solid on the sbs triples and I think they can challenge Duhamel & Radford for the World title.

Concur re: Tarasova & Morozov -- can't deny the skills, the Soviet style line/carriage/tracking/unison, but after few seasons on the senior circuit, you'd think they'd skate with more personality. They lost to a flawed Savchenko & Massot in the FS here.

James & Cipres were the performance of the night for me too. Big ticket items, check; innovative choreography, check; improved connection/oneness and unison, check; and the ability to get a crowd eating out of their hands; CHECK!!! I was skeptical, at first, thinking they're being too ambitious, but Silvia Fontana and John Zimmerman finally figured something out. Whatever that something is it bumped James & Cipres from B+ pair status to ISU Championship contenders!

Your thoughts...

Both of the finals so far make me wanna shout out: Vive la France! J/C were certainly one of the highlights of pairs' free and Laurine Lecavelier in ladies'. Obviously the Russians were impressive in both disciplines but I just tend to get the most thrilled about surprises. In addition to Lecavelier there were plenty in ladies. All these magnificent 17-year-olds just keeping their heads cool when it really mattered: Hendrickx, Toth, Peltonen... Just great! I did love Carolina Kostner's comeback but I was happy Anna Pogorilaya managed to move up from what seemed to be becoming an eternal third step of the podium. She had to fight for it but I feel she totally deserved it.

Having lived in Belgium for over three years now I have started rooting for Belgians in many sports and now I'm just thrilled to see the Hendrickx siblings do so well in figure skating: Jorik in 5th after men's short and Loena finishing 7th in ladies' overall. Well done!

sorry, huh?

I don't understand how C/L can get this call now after performing the same short dance all season. Did they change something?

They changed their straight line lift and after the straight line lift they performed another lift which is suppose to be choreographic highlight but they changed the program from what they had been skating earlier in the season so that Anna swings around Lucca a couple of times which makes it an extra element instead of choreography.

I loved Deniss Vasiljevs' step sequence and and the final sit spin in his short program. So glad he received all 2s and 3 for GOE on those two elements. He has added so many new moves to a step sequence that we have not seen before and the position he achieves in the final sit spin I have never seen before. And he actually knows how to center a spin which often seems to be a lost art among this generation of skaters. I'm sure having Stephane Lambiel as his coach only helps with all this creativity in his moves.

I am hoping he has quads in his arsenal by the time the 2022 games roll around.

Final random comment: can anybody explain the background to Kiss and Cry? It looks very industrial, but I can't work out if those are supposed to be oil derricks or a refinery or what? Certainly an unusual choice, yes?

Viginia to me it just looks like a town square with hills in the background from Ostrava.

Aha. Thanks DL!

Podium pretty much as expected, but the Israelis made a big jump from last year's 10tn to 4th this year.
The judges were not nearly as generous with FD scores as they were with the SD---only 5 teams got SB scores (Cappellini / Lanotte, Fournier / Sorensen, Kaliszek / Spodirev , Nazarova / Nikitin, Lauriault / Legac). Hurtado / Khaliavin got an SB score that wasn't really their SB score---but that was because they weren't on the SB list since their previous competitions were B non-Challenge events that don't make the SB list.

Bobrova / Soloviev were clearly not pleased to be relegated from 1st to 3rd, but clearly that was where they should have placed. C/L and P/C both way outperformed them and that was clear from the audience reaction.

To me the croud greeted Bobrova/Soloviev very well, not less than the Italian couple. The Italians had more entertaining dance (Charlie Chaplin) which of course is easier to be liked by the crowd who doesn't understand much in ice-dancing.

What looks ridiculous to me is how the Italians could be given such high marks with such bad slow skating and why they got level 4 on twizzles with the rude mistake. There must be somebody from Italy in the technical panel - maybe technical controller or technical specialist. Chuckiem, please write from where the technical panel was on the FD.
