2017 US CHAMPIONSHIPS

It it so exciting to finally have a US man that can compete for the podium at Worlds!!! Nathan's jumps were not perfect last night but they are still breathtaking. What an athlete he is.

My goodness I suppose no one saw that performance coming from Ross Minor, but that was vintage Ross, shades of the years he used to finish on the podium at Nationals. His edge work is still a sight to behold.

I like Vincent Zhou and he landed a nice quad Salchow, but higher PCS than Tim Dolensky? I think not.

Jason Brown is one of our best ice dancers in men's skating, but I'm sorry he should not be getting 9s for PCS Performance with an error strewn perfromance like this one. My guess is an ISU panel would not have been so generous.

Sorry I thought Grant Hochstein was over-marked. There is something about his body lines that make me not appreciate his skating very much. For me, he was not 2 points better than Dolensky in PCS last night. I would have Dolensky ahead of him and Jason Brown in the short.

Max Aaron's 4 Sal and 3-3 jumps looked under-rotated to me, he sure is lucky this generous tech panel did not call those on him.

I thought this tech panel was quite generous with all of the level 4s they gave out to spins and step sequences last night.

Lastly, I think the most important pick USFS will make this weekend is who the #2 man will be on the world team. The US will be stuck with just 2 pairs team for some time and the Ladies/Dance both have a decent shot at keeping three teams for Pyeongchang. But with Nathan doing so well internationally, the US has a real shot at getting a third man on the team for Pyeongchang if the right man for the job is selected for Helsinki.

The million dollar question...who is that man???

I can't remember Max Aaron's 3-3 right now but the 4Sal on the replay on TV looked perfectly rotated - it was just that the rest of his body was still a quarter or half turn behind the skate blade. Jason Brown was probably a little over marked but his skating skills are remarkable - the shoot the duck into the split jump - if only he could get that height on his rotating jumps. Nathan Chen has tremendous technical ability and when he gains a little more strength over the next couple years the landings on those quads will smooth out and look so much better. Performance of the night for me was Ross Miner, not the technical content to challenge for the lead, obviously, but the best program and biggest emotional impact.

Overall, not the best men's SP I've ever seen at US Nationals. Lots of mistakes all around and only 3 clean quads out of only 4 attempts. I'll pray for better performed free skates on Sunday before even discussing who would make the strongest World Team. (Perhaps Adam Rippon should've petitioned??)

Max tried to sneak in 3Lutz-3toe after he fell on the opening quad, but he fell on the 3toe as well. He was a hot mess last night: botched all three jump passes, almost went down on his combo spin, and the overall performance just went way flat. Sad to see as I was really rooting for him this week.

Nathan Chen laid it down as I expected. No one's gonna catch him on Sunday. Vincent Zhou, the only

My favorite performance and program was actually Alexander Johnson, who skated 1st. Love the concept and he can dance and interpret every bit as well as Jason Brown, IMO. But 2flip-3toe just ain't gonna cut it. He just can't seem to break through to that next level to be among the top US skaters.

Ross Miner finds himself in a similar position as St. Paul last year: 2nd place after a solid short. He'll need to be whistle clean Sunday night to even have a chance to be considered for Worlds.

Your thoughts...

Adam Rippon couldn't have petitioned: he broke a bone in his foot, and he will be off the ice for too long a time for him to be ready to compete at Worlds.

Ross Miner has had two bad seasons internationally, so even if he managed a podium finish at Worlds, there is no way he'd get a spot on the World team. For him, shining at Nationals doesn't translate to good performances in international competition, so with Olympic berths on the line, he'd be a poor choice for the 2017 World team.

I've always liked Alex Johnson, too, but he's had his share of injuries, and each one keeps him from moving higher in the standings.

I wasn't at all surprised to see Tim Dolensky and Andrew Torgashev so high in the standings after the SP. Tim has improved so much in the past two years, and Andrew has returned from injury in fine shape---he is one to watch for the future.

Holy Cow!

When was the last time we saw two falls among the top four couples in an ice dance event?

Really glad the judges went for the Shibs rather than Chock/Bates. Madison and Evan skated very well, but I didn't enjoy their performance nearly as much. "Under Pressure" was too discordant and jarring, especially after the ethereal spell that Maia and Alex managed to weave.

I enjoy both FDs because they are so different. And C/B's FD was so much tighter and well-skated than it has been so far this season. They will be in even better shape by Worlds. It doesn't hurt to have two such highly skilled teams representing the US in Helsinki. I felt bad for H/D and especially H/B. Those teams never have spills like that---no wonder they were so stunned!

I grieve for H/B. They are my favs for the future. As for H/D, I have never cared for her and I think any team that states they will be shocked to come in third deserves what they get. Karma is a b*tch.

Actually Virginia the judges went for Chock and Bates in the free dance. And even though I prefer the Shibs the judges did get it right today by having C&B winning the free dance. The Shibs seemed just a tad slower today than they did at the GP Final. I have not been a huge fan of C&B's Under Pressure program this season but they have made some changes to the program since the GP Final and I do like it better.

Pogrebinsky and Benoit did a fine job finishing in fourth place. I look forward to watching them progress next year. They have a big upside to them.

The ice in Kansas City looks like it has a white, rough surface over the ice. I'm wondering if this condition is contributing to all of the falls and slow skating we are seeing :?: :?:

Wow. After Ashley skated I really thought she had won the title. Nevertheless I'm glad she skated well and made it a close competition. I sure hope karen chen can bring this level of skating to Helsinki. maria bell sure showed her competitive instincts after botching her first two jumps but then skating lights out. Seeing Zhang skate so well after all her struggles just warmed my heart. I do wish Nagasu would have skated better and challenged for the title. She was quite fortunate to be beat Zhang in the free.

Some of these judges sure gave some interesting GOE marks. I thought Ashley did a great triple flip jump but one judge gave her -2. Zhang did a hideous step sequence with no speed yet one judge gave her +2. Zhang did an awesome triple loop triple loop but one judge her -1. When you see marks like that you'd love to ask that judge what were they thinking.

Intersting that gracie gold is telling usfs to "please put me on the world team you won't be disappointed". If usfs bumps bell for gold that will be a damn shame.

When Ashley did 3z+1t at the end of her FS, I knew she had lost. She had said in an interview that she needed both 3/3s to win: the 3f+3t and the lutz 3/3 at the end. Then the caller URd her 3f/3t<, and it was all over.

Mirai let the gold medal get into her head and that piled on the nerves. She probably would still have the same URs, but maybe not the fall on the lutz. What I found odd was Johnny Weir wondering why Mirai wasn't selling her program. When she is competing, Mirai never sells her programs---she concentrates on the technical elements, not the music. Maybe Johnny is remembering some of Mirai's exhibition programs.

chuckie, I had similar thoughts about what Johnny said re: Murai. The only time I remember her heart being on her sleeve is AFTER she skates--and usually when she has skated poorly. I really felt sorry for her.

I'm through with Gracie. She doesn't have the nerves to compete. If they put her on the team for World's, she will find some new way to screw up.

Ladies FS: woo! That was a lot!

Lemme start w/Caroline Zhang. She's still skates slow as molasses. She still has an egregious FLutz. I saw it; the audience surely saw it. BUT WHO CARES?!?! I think everybody wanted this skate for her and Caroline gave it to all of us. Whatever she lacks in the necessary skill set to ever contend seriously at the highest levels internationally, she makes up for in competitive grit. 3loop-3loop as well as Tara Lipinski!! And 6th place!! Who would've thunk after that horrific surgery she went through. PROPS, KUDOS!!

Mariah Bell: Before she skated I figured she'd stay in 6th; 5th max depending on how Tessa Hong would skate later on the final group. When she fell on her 3loop I thought my prediction was confirmed. But she nailed the rest of her jump passes and she really does present herself really, really well. Raf has strengthened her edging, IMO, and ice coverage -- and she does not have a larger command and overall presence out there. Great for her!

Gracie Gold: Like St. Paul, she was about 8 points off the leader. I thought she'd kill it again like last year and put the heat on the rest. Good (not her best) 3Lutz-3toe to start, but the demons of this season just won't leave. The rest just unraveled like a flat tire. The only other clean triple was her last Salchow -- and even there she lost count of her 2toes. Not to kick her when she's down, but if she's seriously even considering asking for consideration for Helsinki, I gotta ask what in Hades she's snorting. She's tanked every event she's entered. I'm sorry, but she needs to stay home and figure some things out.

Tessa Hong: As I said she's not a good free skater, but she absolutely tanked too. How she scored 100+ for only two triples and 3 singled passes...yeah...

Karen Chen: Best free since Greensboro '15, but overall I thought she was very beatable. She doubled one of her Salchows . I hope she does carry this momentum to Four Continents and Worlds.

Ashley Wagner: I concur -- I thought she did enough to win, but part of this sentiment is partial. More objectively: Even w/the UR call on the back end 3toe, she tried 7 triples as opposed to Karen's 6, plus the PCS edge.

Mirai Nagasu: Started off well w/3flip-3toe, but fall on next 3Lutz flattened the tires. Tightened up w/rest of the jumps, which led to the carrots, and the zombie presentation. Placement behind Mariah Bell was absolutely correct.

Your thoughts...

Actually when she says both 3/3s she is reffering to her second combo 3loop 1loop 3 salchow.

Her final combo was a planned 3 lutz 2 toe. She singled the planned double toe.

Gracie's coaches said just before Nationals that she was in better shape than she'd been in during the GP, but she wasn't where she needed to be yet, and that was after two weeks of intensive training. She was able to get her 3/3 back, but the stamina just wasn't there. The plan was for her to do as well as she could under the circumstances and if she were put on the team, they could get her into fighting trim before Worlds. The main thrust of their effort was to pull her out of the deep depression she'd been in since Worlds, stop blaming herself, and see herself as the top athlete she is and can be.

It was obvious that she didn't have the muscle tone she needed to sustain her through the FS.

Frank Carroll, the revered gentleman of the USFSA, reported that he'll end his coaching relationship w/Gracie Gold as soon as they can sort out the contractual obligations. He certainly wasted no time reporting it to IceNetwork though -- shade, no shade!! Really crappy thing to do. Reminds me of how he announced his split w/Tim Goebel circa the Fall of '03.

Needless to say, this season was utterly disasterous for Gracie. She said it best to NBC -- she can take her time to think this through and find the right new coach.

MENS FREE:
Completely anticlimactic, IMO.

Nathan Chen nails five clean quads!! Bow down!! Certainly nowhere near the artistry of Chan's winning performance up north, but you can deny the jumping firepower.

It'll be an interesting conversation regarding who between Vincent Zhou and Jason Brown goes to Helsinki. Tammy Gambill feels Zhou is ready for the big time, but I suspect the USFSA will go w/Brown as a World Team of Chen & Brown will be more likely to regain that third men's spot. Of course, Brown will need to have a quad ready for showtime in March.

Your thoughts...

I agree Jonas I'm guessing USFS picks Brown for Helsinki. I do think USFA should mandate a test skate though about two weeks before he is sent to worlds to test his lingering injury. Not sure they have ever done that? CHen was just jaw dropping. So glad the US men are fianlly back in the coversation internationally. If Zhou goes to jr worlds i sure hope he skates like he did here, doing so might put him on that podium.
