Of all of the Russian Super Girls, Kostornaia is the only one that I think has a hope of retaining her jumps once she hits puberty. We see Zagitova struggling to achieve full rotations now that her body is curvier, and I don't hold out much hope for Trusova getting through puberty with her quads intact, but Kostornaia has much better technique and overall skating skills than either of Zagitova or Trusova. But her biggest advantage in keeping her jumps is her fine boned, naturally lean body type.

Zagitova really seems to be struggling. She looks slow, her positions are weak, and her moves lack finish. In the Olympic year, she seemed to be floating over the ice with ease. These programs looked like a slog through wet sand.

NOTE TO NBC: Now that the music has lyrics, and people are singing and playing music, please stop the commentators from talking over the singing. You can't tell what's being sung or said. It's just a cacaphony. Wait until the music moves into an instrumental section, or better yet, make these comments during the replays.

Agree that Kostornaia has the best shot of making it beyond the next season or so. For the reasons you mention, but also because she has an innate musicality that the other Russian girls lack. Would be so awesome to see a Lori Nichol or Shae-Lynne Bourne program on her!

Completely agree re: Kostornaia. She has better overall technique than her two younger training mates, yet she has the easiest program jumpwise. She also trumps her two training mates in PCS by a mile, if you ask me. It's gonna be really interesting to watch Eteri's trio in Torino going head to head to head.

Had Roman Sadovsky not had those two errors, he would've easily won silver here. Greater takeaway I guess is that he's now a legit contender for the Canadian title along w/Nam Nguyen and Keegan Messing. Like Nam, Sadovsky has won a Grand Prix medal and can be really good when he's on, but on the converse side, he's probably just as likely to tank to mediocrity as Nam often does.

Watched the top three pairs:
Even with the fall, Sui & Han were the class of the field here. They skate w/an extra swagger that the rest of the field here simply doesn't quite have. This is NOT to say, however, that they can flop like that going up against Boikova & Kozlovski, who've been really consistent and red hot this season, at the Grand Prix Final.

Nice to see Moore-Towers and Marinaro skate up to their billing as THE top Canadian pair.

Mishina & Galliamov are another promising and seemingly hungry team from Russia -- really, they're on par technically w/Boikova & Kozlovskii. They were hardly happy after his mistake on the sbs 3Sal in the SP. Whistle clean technically in the FS, but I sensed that they were a little disappointed at their score. Good thing is that I think they're aware that they do need to work on the PCS. They've got time and talent on their hands.

Your thoughts...

Although I’ve been a Sadovsky fan since he first started skating junior, I’m not going to get too excited until I see some kind of real consistency. Roman has moments of brilliance, but they’re too few and far between to this point. I’ve never recovered from the emotional roller coaster that was Sandhu.

I'm confused again!!! I understand that one must have a combination in the short program. I think I understand that if a skater does not do a combination he will receive zero points for that third jumping pass. Okay. I saw a couple of short program skaters get zero points for popping a quad into a double, so I know it happens. Why, then, when Jason Brown fell on his last jumping pass and never even had a chance to make it a combo, did Ashley Wagner talk about him getting only a percentage of the base value blah blah blah/

Double jumps other than 2a are illegal in a senior SP--that's why a quad popped to a double in the SP gets 0. Same for 1a, or for a triple jump that has been downgraded, such as 3lo<<. But in the case of a fall on a triple or quad intended to be in combination, but the skater falls on the first jump, as long as the triple/quad isn't rated <<, the skater does get some credit for that first jump. That's why it shows on the protocol as 3z+COMBO.
