TARASOVA / MOROZOV have 24 points and must wait for the NHK results to see if they qualify.
At NHK there are two pairs with 15 points each, and one pair with 13 points.
If the two with 15 points finish 1st and 2nd and the pair with 13 points does not finish 3rd, Tarasova / Morozov qualify automatically.
However, if the two with 15 points finish 1st and 2nd and the pair with 13 points (Moore-Towers/Marinaro) does finish third, then there would be a tie-break situation:
If MT/M score 210.58 points or more, they qualify for the GPF and T/M become first alternates.
If M/TM finish 1st or 2nd and one of the 15-pointers finish 3rd, then all three teams will have 26 points or more, and Tarasova / Morozov cannot qualify for the GPF

Tarasova/Morozov have execrable music this year in the LP. Here's hoping they don't make the final; I'm not sure I can listen to it again.
I didn't think they could pick something worse than Candyman, but they came close.

I get that Trusova has quads, and the points system with TES...….but the result of this competition is disturbing to me. I found Trusova's program lackluster, even with the quads sprinkled in there, the falls were distracting, and the long skating around the rink to setup the quads were boring....and she comes from behind to win by a significant margin over a clean Medvedeva. System overhaul needed.

It would be helpful if the judges weren't gifting her on PCS marks. Her skating is not worthy of 8's in skating skills, or choreography. Medved herself was getting 9's when she skated her entire program in the center of the ice without ever going to the ends of the rink. The ability to rotate in the air is not indicative of the ability to skate, to move in concert with the music and express a program. Absent the big jumps, Trusova would be getting 6's and 7's for her skating skills, and choreography. And I say this as someone who loves Trusova.
The larger difficulty is that it's hard to beat someone who can score 20 points in a single jumping pass - consistently.

				Yay, some discussion!!

I only saw some of the ladies.
Sadly, I've kinda resigned myself to the apparent fact that, sometimes, the judges just kinda game the judging system to overzealously and excessively reward the "it" skater(s) of the moment. First it was Medvedeva, then Zagitova, then now the quad tweenies Scherbakova and Trusova.
Medvedeva, IMO, is a much stronger overall skater now than she was when she was just dominating the scene -- better ice coverage, more flow and speed in and out of the jumps, yet she's kinda been passed, so she's not scoring anywhere near the egregious marks she was being doled out.
Trusova, OTOH, can rotate these quads and she's scoring off the charts. Not only am I NOT sold on her PCS, some of her Grades of Execution on those quads are definitely too much! I don't fault her and her team for playing the game, nor do I lament her winning because the math on the technical side is just very clearly to her favor and should be rewarded. However, yes, she is clearly NOT a senior skater in the other important stuff departments.
Nice to see Mariah Bell really stepping up her role as one of the US's most reliable ladies' competitors. Technical aside (not that she doesn't have the goods here), there's something very genuine and heartfelt about the way she performs.
Boikova & Kozlovskii are really trying to establish themselves as Russia's new #1 team. Love watching them! I've seen many a Russian pair w/nicer lines and better posture (Koz in particular here), but the packaging is great! I like his bravado combined w/her more relaxed, yet equally strong, presence on the ice.
Your thoughts...

Sadly, this mucking around with PCS is an old story by now, and it has, frankly, turned me off of the women's event altogether.
It's hugely impressive that these young girls can do these jumps of course. But none of them stick around for long, and that's not so good for the sport, IMO. Fans can't invest in one of them because it's too heartbreaking to see them cast aside a season or two later. Plus, they all look the same to me. There is nothing that distinguishes one from the other in terms of choreography, and none of them actually look like women on the ice. In fact, they look like girls who are in for a lifetime of body image issues and physical ailments! I find it boring and sad and as a result have mostly just stopped watching.
(Exception is Alena Kostornaia, who is a special talent and I so wish she'd get the heck away from Eteri so she can have a long career that includes skating past her 18th birthday. Her double axel is right up there with Kurt Browning at his peak.

 )

Yes, the PCS being doled out to little girls with big jumps and little else, is an old, old story by now. The problem isn't that these girls are "cast aside" a year or two later, it's that a year or two later they develop hips and breast, which changes their centres of gravity and slows rotations, and suddenly Zagitova is getting under-rotation calls. I'm waiting for the judges to notice that Zagitova breaks at the waist and pumps her back while stroking, and her PCS to drop to the low 8's where it belongs.

Exactly, DL, they are cast aside because they become women and are no longer jumping machines. It's no longer the women's event, it's the girl's event. And if I wanted that I would just watch the junior competitions!

Question: If GoE scores are supposed to range from -5.00 to +5.00 why am I seeing scores of -5.20? And did it seem like the judges were handing out a lot of extremely low GoE''s at this competition?

The GOE represents, at least in pairs & singles, a percentage of the base value of the element - +1 is 10%, +2 is 20%, and so on. So if an element is worth more than 10 points, than the maximum GOE is going to more than five points, so for example, a quad lutz is worth 11.50 and so the maximum GOE is 5.75.

What makes Boikova / Kozlovski great to watch is the strong connection between them, and how much they enjoy skating together. Sadly, that can't be said for Tarasova / Morozov, who look more like two singles skaters who happen to be on the ice at the same time, and aren't that happy about it.

on a sad note, Alina Zagitova withdrew form the Russian CHampionships. My understanding of the Russian language is way below limited, however it seems as if she is suspending (temporrarily?) her sports career. Alina is 17.
https://tass.com/sport/1099391A subsequent communication seems to point to the fact that the suspension is indeed temporary:
https://tass.com/sport/1099521In my opinion we are looking at another JuLip case.
I think the ISU should take a long, hard look in the mirror.

IMO, I would compare Zagitova to fellow Olympic Champion Adelina Sotnikova. I would not be surprised in the least if Zagitova ultimately never returns to competition. It's been reported that Zagitova herself hinted that it's becoming increasingly difficult for her to want to compete. She's won everything there is to win and part of her has to feel resigned to the fact that it is unlikely for her to surpass her training mates who are 3Axeling and multiple quad jumping their way to the top. Zagitova is indeed only 17 and she could up her ante to compete if she wanted to, but that'll also prove to be difficult, I'm sure, because she's clearly got more T&A than she did when she won in Pyeongchang.

I would compare ALina to JuLip since they are victims of the same perverted system: judges decide to ignore clear technical flaws and award PCS that do not correspond to the level of the skater and the program. This way, on one side the tech flaws are not addressed, on the other more skaters are pushed to follow the same 'magic formula' that allowed results not matching the real technical and artistic level of the skaters. Tutberidze girls are clones of each other, with the vast majority of them being discarded as soon as the puberty begins. The discard is due to the fact that judges prize junior skaters (when lucky without technical flaws) skating junior-ish programs in senior competitions.
The moment the body transforms into that of a lady and/or the technical flaws begin to take the obvious toll on a more mature body type, the skaters are no longer competitive. Both JuLip and ALina, at the moment of their best results, were two flawed skater with junior programs, exciting as they may have been. IN particular, Alina's were also poorly constructed: it is not a coincidence that rules were put in place with regards to how many jumps could be executed in the second half of the program.
Where were the judges when 9's were awarded for a back loaded program? Where were the judges when pre-rotated 2A received +2/+3 goes? Why was Alina never marked correctly for her posture? What judges decide to ignore is that marking correctly defends the sports and the health of these girls.

It is Alina's posture and jump technique that would make it extremely difficult for her to learn 3-1/2 to 4 rotations. She starts all her jumps by bending over---that has worked OK for standard triple jumps, but I don't see how bending down can in any way set up for 3a or quad. At the GPF, when she bent down to execute 2a, she nearly fell right on her face.

I don't think that Eteri has the ability to teach proper technique that will allow her skaters to turn their jumps past the point of puberty. So she essentially treats them as disposable, with no regard whatsoever for their long-term health (or longevity in the sport).
This is really bad for the sport because fans want someone who they can follow and root for over a long period. Fans want greatness and growth.
As I said above, I'm not really interested in women's skating anymore, it's boring and predictable. Agree that the ISU needs to wake up and fix this.

This rewarding of flawed technique has been going on for the past 30 years. That's why the technical panel is calling under-rotations, and edges - because judges were rewarding under-rotated jumps with errors on take-offs and landing edges.
I strongly disagree that Zagitova can increase her rotations now that she has curves. Physics is not her friend. Juniors have been landing quads since Miki Ando, but not one of the female quadsters has retained the quad past puberty. Mau Asada is one of the few women to retain her triple axel into seniors, but she has a slimmer frame for faster rotations.
