CHINA OPTING OUT OF 2018-19 EVENTS

China has withdrawn from its scheduled events for the 2018-2019 season.

The 9/19-22 JGP event scheduled for Harbin will take place in VANCOUVER BC CANADA

The 9/29-10/1 Shanghai Trophy invitational event has been CANCELLED

The 11/02-04 Cup of China GP event will take place in SOUTH KOREA, city TBA

That of course means the GP host picks will be named by Korea, not China. This should not affect Boyang Jin or the Chinese Pair teams who are on the Wtop10, top 24 SB and/or WR lists, but could affect Chinese ladies and dance teams. Korea will have a great opportunity to get more exposure for its skaters on the GP.

Canada will have the opportunity to name more competitors to the JGP event in Vancouver.

This seems really, really odd to me! Does anyone else feel that way?

First of all, the Beijing Olympics are nearly four years away. They're supposedly concentrating on getting ready for those games, but that explanation doesn't make sense to me. Surely you'd want more major skating events in your home country leading up to the Olympics, not fewer? To stir up public interest and give your skaters experience competing in a top international event on home ice?

I could understand if there was only one arena in China, which will be under renovation during next season and therefore unavailable, but ... no way. China has many major cities with many arenas.

What gives?

Their rationale was they wanted to focus all their financial resources on building/renovating facilities for 2022 and the ISU was sympathetic to their needs.

Actually, good for them. Makes sense.

It is not 100% certain that Korea will host the GP event vacated by China. They will notify the ISU by June 25 if they will accept. If so, the event will be held in the Olympic venue at PyeongChang. If Korea cannot host for some reason, the event will be offered to Milan, Italy at the World 2018 venue. If that won't work, the GP will be down to 5 events, which would be a problem.

However, I doubt Korea will turn down the opportunity to host the GP. FS is wildly popular in Korea, so no problem selling tickets, and it's a great chance to get competitive exposure for their up-and-coming ladies.

It is likely that China won't be hosting a GP event in the next couple of years as well. That opens the chance for Korea to elbow its way into the GP permanently, or if not, future opportunities for other countries to host a GP event.

Why not give it back to Germany?

Could this perhaps have something to do with the "opt out"?
