Congrats to the ISU and anyone else who thinks that makes sense, but I do not. And I'm proud of Canada for taking a more modern approach, using a term that isn't loaded by outdated associations of what a female should be and how they should behave. The rest of the world should do the same.

Also, there ARE mens skaters who technically not adults as well. What should they be called?

As for cheering for all skaters, I totally agree that it makes the sport more enjoyable. We should all cheer for good skating!

I am SO tired of political correctness being applied willy-nilly to everything.
In figure skating, the terms LADIES, MEN, PAIRS, ICE DANCE are labels that signify separate and distinct disciplines, period. They are not meant to have any meaning other than that. Apparently in Canada offense is taken at the label "Ladies", so that has been changed in Canada. However, there has apparently been no global offense taken, so the ISU hasn't changed its label, and even the political-offense-oversensitive US hasn't objected to it either, so no change here.

We will agree to disagree here. Your own logic—that it's ladies because there are females younger than 18—is faulty, as I pointed out. And I'm CERTAIN that there is global offence taken to the term, but the US (and the ISU, hardly a bastion of progressive values) has simply not caught up. In time, they will. Until then, I'll continue to point it out on random internet chat boards. ;)

As for Finland, happy to see them jump back into the Grand Prix, and hope that their participation will fuel the growth of the sport there.

Bumphy---c'mon now---you can't be certain that the world agrees with you! And you don't live in the US, so you have no idea how ridiculously politically correct things are here. What I do know is that USFS hasn't objected to the term LADIES and there's been no groundswell of indignation among FS fans to change it to WOMEN.

If I were you, I wouldn't hold my breath while waiting for the ISU or any other large FS federation to follow Canada's extirpation of "Ladies".

Like I said, agree to disagree. And definitely not interested in going any further into politics when we are talking about figure skating—a decidedly more enjoyable topic to me (and you too, I suspect).

OK---but just remember: you introduced the topic. No one else has ever complained about ISU terminology.

Anyway, keep an eye posted for the SUMMER COMPETITION thread, because there are a few good ones coming up soon, including Skate Milwaukee, which is a joint US/Canada Novice competition 7/11-15, and Skate Detroit 7/17 which has several Canadian entries including in the large Pairs competition.

And of course the big ISU-credited Lake Placid Ice Dance competition starts 7/24, followed by Minto on 7/26 and the ISU-credited Philadelphia International on 7/30.

She's been replaced in FINLAND by HANUL KIM and in FRANCE by ALEXIA PAGANINI

Radionova is out of NHK as well and has been replaced w/Alena Leonova! Leonova is still surprisingly high enough in the world standings to get an invite, but she is reportedly a Japanese fan favorite, so...

Gabby Daleman is also out of NHK; not sure if the Japanese Fed will still replace her though. Maybe Hanul Kim can get her 2nd invite??

Two GP HELSINKI dropouts: Alexei EROKHOV and Nicole SCHOTT. Probably no replacements.

Can't say I mind about Radionova; she gets on my nerves. Rarely has a skater rubbed me the wrong way like she has.

I have to say that the lineup at Helsinki is pretty uninteresting ...

Are you not interested in watching the performances of the two current Olympic champions?

Hanyu, sure. He never fails to dazzle.

But I'm actually most curious to see what the North Korean pair has come up with. They fascinate me!

I'm interested to see Hanyu, too. Zagitova is not one of my favorites at all because of her faulty posture. I prefer Medvedeva, Tsurskaya and Sotskova.

Pap and Ciz are out of NHK. He's injured his back.

https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2018/11/ ... on-injury/

Their agent says the injury isn't serious and he expects to be at GP France in two weeks, but this kills their chances for the GP Final.

Higuchi is out of Rostelecom. Probably a good thing for her, as she can't make the final anyway and she needs to heal to get ready for Japanese Nationals next month.

Wakaba Higuchi is off the roster for Rostelecom Cup. Reports have it that she hasn't fully recovered from injury while she competed very listlessly at Skate Canada. Here's hoping she's fully healthy and in fighting form come Japanese Nationals.

Karen Chen has withdrawn from Rostelecom Cup and probably won't be replaced.

Not surprised she's withdrawn, considering her chronic foot problems. What IS surprising is the lateness of her withdrawal---you'd think she'd have the graciousness to do so at least a week earlier.

Karen Chen is also listed for the Tallinn Trophy Challenger. If she's not prepared to compete at Rostelecom, I can't imagine her suddenly being ready to compete two weeks later. Here's hoping she bows out of Tallinn early enough for the USFSA to feasibly send a replacement.

Your thoughts...

Karen is still on the Tallinn entry list---who could possibly replace her? Mariah Bell, Bradie Tennell and Megan Wessenberg are all listed for Golden Spin the following week (although we could cross our fingers and hope Bradie wins a big enough medal at IDF to make the GPF instead).
