Can somebody explain the deduction and the 0.00 for the curve lift for Stepanova/Bukin? I watched their performance from the EC and it looked similar but no deduction there. Without the deduction they would have been 3rd or 4th.

They performed an extra lift. They only lost a point for that deduction so it wasn't that severe and would have only resulted in them being sixth rather than seventh. There is a choreographic movement after the partial step sequence where he grabs and drags her by her knee, and her foot came off the ice for more than one revolution and so they were charged with an illegal element deduction.

However, that cancelled the curve lift which scored o.oo as per the score card. If the lift would have counted they would have been much higher. Is that correct?

The problem with the back loaded program is that is something goes amok early in the jumping passes, there is no recovery time. The next jump is right there and there no time to gather yourself together and re-focus.

There are a lot of issues with this girls skating. She breaks at the waist which they cover by having her wearing tutus in both programs, and she’s very stiff in the knees. Nothing looked smooth or fluid today. Her footwork was jerky. Maybe she’s just tired.

I've always had issues with Zagitova's posture, from the very first time I saw her skate. When she's tired, that forward-leaning upper body just makes falling so much easier.

I totally agree about the back-loaded program. How long do you think it will take the powers that be to address this horrible misuse of the CoP? And ever since you first mentioned the breaks at the waist I've been zeroing in on her tutus!! Who would have believed it had anyone predicted there would be no Russian ladies on the podium this year?

I was so stunned by her, the Russian's, skate that I forgot to congratulate Kaetlyn--my "hometown" girl. We lived in Sherwood Par k in the early 80's--long before she was born.

The 10% bonus was implemented to make sure there would be no front-loading of the programs. Plushenko comes to mind as the power that be thought it would force skaters to evenly distribute the jumps. It had an adverse effect in some cases. It would be wise to limit the number of jumping passes that can have the bonus to maybe 3 or 4. Same in my opinion for the arm over the head. It has become a distraction and it has lost its appeal. Just my 2 cents.

Halfway through men's free here in Milan. So far Brezina has been the absolute highlight. I cannot recall him skating such a great free in years. Makes me so happy :)

*Rant alert*

My heart breaks for Zagitova. She is a CHILD! Seeing her face so disappointed when she came off the ice, clearly exhausted and depleted, crying into Eteri's shoulder...makes me so cross that our sport is sanctioning the churning out these young girls.

As others have pointed out, her skating is still completely juniorish and yet is still rewarded, which sends the wrong message. It says as long as you land jumps (in the last half!) we don't really care if you can skate to music, hold a nice line, or interpret choreography.

Scariest part for her is that there is a good chance that next season she will be either injured or already usurped by a new skater created in her likeness. I really think it is time for the ISU to consider a higher minimum age restriction for the senior level. The health of the skaters should come first.

I am so glad that a woman won, a complete skater who pays attention to every aspect of her skating. Well deserved.

Talk about a SPLAT FEST in that final group of men's free skates. Just a complete let down from that very talented group of men.

Keegan Messing was on the cusp of becoming one of the elites. I always contended that he has the goods, but just simply not delivered today. Two popped quads attempts and a fall on another just zapped all the energy out of what was otherwise a well constructed program.

Shoma Uno splatted on three of his four quads, but the last minute rally on his last three jumping passes gets him his second World silver. He just simply didn't look like an Olympic silver medallist here this week.

Boyang Jin I thought would sail right past Uno, but he splatted even worse. With all the missed quads, his weaknesses just came front and center and he rightfully plummeted in the standings.

Kolyada was, well, Kolyada. He did what I expected: flashes of greatness, but just CANNOT hold it all together. Kolyada is World Champion caliber, but his bronze medal here is the result of Vincent Zhou's misfortune.

Right before Zhou skated, I thought that the US would go 1-2 here. I also thought Zhou would run a quad clinic, put the heat on Chen, and, call me crazy, possibly pull a huge, exciting upset. That changed immediately after his first quad attempt. He was visibly tight and, sadly, the splat fest continued. Exacerbating the splat fest was the fact that this was going be a carrot fest as well AND that his speed was just simply nowhere near that of Kolyada's who skated right before. His score rightfully plummeted as well.

How providential was Max Aaron when he said in an interview here that he was admittedly undertrained and that he was simply here to assist his teammates as best as he can?? His 11th place here saved the third spot for the US, which could very well be his again if he would still want it.

The World title was pretty much a done deal for Nathan Chen, who probably could've won this title with just one or two quads, but he tried all 6 of them anyway and landed 5 cleanly. That's a competitor! His performance left me much to be desired -- still seemingly going mostly from one end of the ice to another to set up the quads, but he kept his tushy up, so...

Your thoughts...

About Alina Zagitova's costume-pack and jumps in the second half of the program. You probably forgot that her long program was on the music from the Don Quixote ballet by Minkus.
Look at this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOIZyYbidAU
Starting from the 12th minute, only jumping elements come and the ballerina in a red pack twists the fouette. Look and you will understand why Alina jumps exactly where it is demanded by the music and by the theme of the ballet.

I'm quite well aware of the ballet, as I've seen it several times. However, I've never seen a ballerina in Don Quixote or any other ballet bent over at that angle while she dances. A classical dancer with posture like that wouldn't be hired for the corps de ballet, let alone in a featured role.

Sorry, I mean Alina's dress is the ballet tutu. I used wrong translation for it.

Ellen, has it occurred to you that Alina may have chosen her music to accommodate her tutus?

It is difficult to dance as perfect as the ballerinas of the Bolshoi theater. But this does not mean that the girls can not take this theme for their programs. Even Kaetlyn Osmond was in the form of the black swan from the Swan Lake. Although, you agree, she is very remotely looks like a swan and her choreography is also different from the ballet-like.
I actually do not pay attention to the fact that Alina leans forward. If you had not pointed on that, such an idea would never came to my mind.
