According to what I've heard, the Japanese aren't putting Hanyu in the team event. They're saving him for the men's singles.

My moment of the night (or, erm, morning) was the Kneirms. I just loved how relaxed they were and they seemed to enjoy every second of their skate. And Alexa's dress is I think my all-time fave on any skater. Beautiful!

Canada definitely got extremely lucky in the men's event and are in good shape. Do we think the Americans have a shot at Silver?

Canada is in great shape for gold but I think Russia will pass the USA for silver unless BOB/SOLO bomb big time in dance.

The ice dance & ladies events look like they will be a wash between the US & Russia - well not a wash completely - the Russians should be ahead. The men's & pairs free skates could be really crucial. Zabiiako & Enbert are apparently doing the free skate and so it's not out of the realm of possibility that the Knierims & Rippon could score more points in those events than the Russians. Kolyada's short program took a nice orderly podium and made it confusing.

I’ll be interested to see if the Shibs can place 2nd in dance tonight and if Bradie can some how sneak into the top three.

I find it interesting that Pap/Ciz decided to skip the team event. We will soon see if that helps them later or if it gives virtue and Moir an advantage getting more ice time on Olympic ice in Pyeongchang.

Pap/Ciz probably saw no sense in facing V/M in the team event as France would have no chance making the final 5 with Besseghier placing last and Meite likely in the bottom 5 too.

It looks as if the final 5 will be CAN OAR USA JPN and ITA.

I must admit I am concerned about Mirai skating the FS (if that is what is planned). The Ladies TS is a apparently a nitpicker when it comes to URs----Kostner, Osmond and Miyahara all got carrots for their 3/3s. Mirai could get multiple URs for her FS. OTOH, it may not make a difference, because it's likely that even a clean 7 triple performance from Bradie would finish 5th behind messy performances from Kostner, Osmond, etc. because of lower PCS scores.

I have a feeling that Bradie's PCS scores will get higher at Worlds and by next season, she won't be held back any more if she keeps delivering clean skates every time out.

At this point, I'd rather see them go with Karen Chen. I'm afraid that after Nathan's disastrous short program, we're toast anyway.

The judge that gave Medvedeva a +3 GOE for her double axel needs to go back to GOE scoring school. Please and thank you. Bradie losing fourth place by one hundreth of a point to Miyahara sure hurt the US chances for staying ahead of Italy. But I do think that bolds well for the free program that she is so close to a top skater like Miyahara in the short.

Only one dance team received a level 3 for the Rhumba pattern dance, all the others received 1s and 2s. This is a tough dance panel so will be interesting to see if it stays that way for the individual dance events. I’m sure the Shibs feel lucky to get second in the short but I sure wish another US dance team was doing the free dance.

Mar/Hot’s pairs free skate was the highlight of the night for me. They skated with such joy and I hope that carries over to the individual pairs event for them.

Predicting tonight’s final team result is a challenge in terms of bronze. Gold and silver is 100% rapped up for Canada and Russia.

Rizzo will come in 5th in the men’s event but Mirai could easily come in 5th in the ladies. So those two placements could become a wash. Cap/Lan beat the Shibs in the free dance at the GPF and I can see that happening again, so a potential one point advantage there for Italy. If that happens the US better hope Cap/Lan does not also beat Bob/Solo.

So I see it coming down to where Rippon and Costner place in their events. The men’s event is the most interesting to me because Japan decided to enter Tanaka. Now the men’s event is an absolute four horse race. Any of the men (leaving out Rizzo) could win this free program. If Rippon can somehow get second that would give the US a three point advantage over Italy in the men’s event. That means the US would need Costner to beat Mirai by no more that two spots, to still have a chance to win bronze.

There's no doubt in my mind that Mirai will be 5th in the ladies event. But it looks as if Zagitova will win and Kostner will again finish 2nd unless she messes up technically the way she did in the GPF. Daleman is not Osmond, and if she isn't 100% clean, she won't get as much of a PCS boost. Sakamoto beat a clean Bradie at SA, and she can surely beat a not-so-clean Mirai, but she won't get the PCS scores to beat Kostner.

My apologies to Rizzo! You did not come in 5th. Sorry! At least with Mirai I did say “could” come in 5th. So happy for her-cannot believe she came in 2nd here! The triple Axel!

It was the nine judges giving GOE and PCS scores that placed Kolyada over Rippon. The tech panel did their job correctly.
On PCS Adam was underscored on performance and interpretation. Kolyada overscored on performance and skating skills (sorry i think when you fall and almost fall on another jump-you should not get five 9s for skating skills and two 9s for performance). I’m saying that and I love Kolyada’s skating but on this night the nine judges screwed up royally.

I sure hope the judge who gave Adam a 0 GOE score on his second to last spin, has to explain to the referee why there was no positive grade of execution for that spin. PLEASE!

I still dislike their free dance music but the Shibs must be quite pleased to beat both Bob/Solo and Cap/Lan here, two of their main rivals for individual bronze.

V&M were sublime as usual! Team Canada blew this field away.

Does anyone know why V&M skated both programs? Canada only made one change to their lineups, so it seems like they would have let Weaver/Poje skate one program, to let them too have an OGM.

I have no idea why Canada didn't allow Weaver/Poje to do one of the dance segments. Canada was so far ahead after the SD that even if W/P finished 5th in the FD (which wouldn't have happened anyway) Canada would still have won gold easily. That had to have been very hurtful for W/P.

OTOH, I do understand why the Shibs wanted to do both segments after two poor FD performances at the GPF and Nationals, they wanted to put in an improved FD performance before the individual dance event.

FINAL POINT TOTALS:

73 CAN Gold
66 OAR Silver
62 USA Bronze
56 ITA
50 JPN

Wow. I now have a new strategy--go in expecting the worst! Mirai was wonderful. I was so sure she would choke. My personal opinion of Adam vs Mikhail is that the judges didn't think much of Adam's plan to slip past the guys who screwed up their quads. But even though I'm not happy with Adam's attitude, I think he was robbed.

Agree about Adam. Tech team looked under a microscope to find some fault in Adam's FS. Meanwhile, the judging panel had piled on the PCS unjustifiably for Kolyada to boost him as high as possible right up front.

I was very surprised at how highly the Russian male single skater scored.
