Sorry, couldn't report this sooner. I cannot watch this in the middle of the night so found daytime showings on the Olympic Channel and went with no spoilers.

Re: 2017 GP#3 CUP of CHINA 11/3-5 BEIJING CHN

Postby Jonas » Sat Nov 04, 2017 8:22 pm

I actually woke up this morning to catch the ladies' and men's free skates, but I'll wait till you catch it before commenting.

LADIES SP:
This field was loaded! The top 7 finishers really brought it. Less than four points separated first place (Daleman) and seventh place (Mihara). Had Mihara and Honda not gotten the underrotation calls, I would guess that the point spread would've been about a buck and a half going into the free skate.

Wakaba Higuchi has really improved the "artistic" side, i.e., projecting and emoting more, which makes her already superb skating skills that much more enjoyable to watch. All respect to Daleman and Radionova, who also poured their hearts out in their short programs, but I agree w/the British EuroSport guys that Higuchi's should've been the winning SP.

MEN's SP:
Mikhail Kolyada!! WOW!! I'm probably his biggest uber on this board, but seriously. 4Lutz -- S-A-W-I-S-H. Everything was delivered effortlessly. 100+ points for that performance was well deserved, IMO.

Vincent Zhou took two spills and surprisingly ended up behind both his US teammates after the SP.

Max Aaron did appear to have dodged an underrotation call on his 4toe combo though. Far from perfect, but good for him for getting a two-quad SP out there in his first Grand Prix of the season.

PAIRS:
Sui & Han were clearly the class of this field, but more importantly I think they've established themselves here as THE Olympic Gold Medal favorites. Long gone is the appearance of a pair of teenagers awkwardly racking points doing contortionist tricks. They've really blossomed into a potentially memorable pair -- following in the skates of their current coaches!

If Duhamel & Radford reestablished themselves solidly as CAN's top pair, then I'd also say that Moore-Towers & Marinaro have stepped up to be CAN's unofficial #2 pair right now. Iliushechkina was a hot mess at Skate Canada last week, while M-T&M looked solid and poised here throughout.

Your thoughts...
Jonas

Yes, this was some ladies' event here. I cannot remember a Grand Prix event where 7 ladies all put out pairs of medal worthy performances.

I also felt Higuchi should've won this event. Watching her skate right after Zagitova, I thought Higuchi looked faster, more powerful, more polished, more expressive, and just overall had the better performance of a better choreographed program. IMO, Higuchi should've beaten Zagitova on every component. Zagitova looked comparatively juniorish, albeit a very, very good junior, but won on her ability to land all 7 triples and 2 2Axels with arms over head past the halfway point. Oh well.

The men's FS were a let down. Javi tanked big time.

Kolyada was hot and cold throughout his program: big fall on 4Lutz and singled a planned 4Sal and one of his 3Axels. His lead after the short gave him the victory here.

It's huge that Max Aaron beat Vincent Zhou in both segments here en route to the podium. Max did four clean quads out of five attempts over two programs here (5th attempt was two-footed 4toe combo), so al in all a very good outing for Max here. He'll need to build on this for Grand Prix FRA. Particularly, he'll need to be able to tack on a 3toe on his quad combos in both programs, plus more importantly, he'll need to put a lot more stank in his performance level. As utterly unoriginal his music selections are, I think they, the FS probably more so, can work really well for Max.

I probably would've put Han Yan ahead of Vincent Zhou overall also. Had he been able to tack on the 2toe on his last 3flip, he may have been able to do it. Just one 4toe for Han compared to five attempts from Zhou, but Han's superior overall quality, i.e., +3-worthy 3Axel, and superior performance ability, was evident to me. Still, it was the best FS I've seen from Han Yan, really, since Sochi.

NHK Trophy's live TV broadcasts are even less friendly than Cup of CHN, so I may have to watch the later reruns next week.

The only good thing about the broadcast times of NHK are that the SD and FD start at 10:45 pm EST Fri and 9:45 EST Sat , respectively, so I can watch those live. The rest I will catch on the Olympic Channel earlier in the day.

Although it was tough for me NOT to peek at the results, I really didn't do it.

It was a bit mind-boggling to see Papadakis/Cizeron outscore V/M at CoC. I hadn't expected that---I figured that might happen on home ice, at TDF, and is all the more impressive because it wasn't on home ice.

P/C's scores are surprising to me as well. They are not at the level of V/M, especially with the SD. I realize that they were a few points behind V/M in the SD score, but not by enough. They don't interpret the Latin rhythm nearly as well.

What's crazy here is that we are even seeing world record scores from either team this early in the season! That's not typical.

It will be interesting to see how they stack up when they compete against each other with the same panel. The total scores are very, very close at the moment, and it will depend on how each team performs on the day.

That said, it's hard to ignore the possibility of a political play...

Also, agree about MT/M potentially coming in as Canada #2. I was surprised to see them behind Luba and Dylan at nationals last year. I was at the event and everyone around us thought they were basically tied.

Sad about Javi, though I read that he had the flu. Ashley Cain too. Tough luck.

Very glad to see here that the judges have not pre-ordained Virtue and Moir the Olympic champs. I want to see a healthy competition at the Olympics and the scores PapCiz received here pretty much assure we at least have a two team race for Olympic Gold. I'm sure Chock and Bates were thrilled to beat BobSolo their first time out this season-especially since BobSolo have skated multiple times this season.

I would have had Higuchi in first place here. She was so on technically and expressed herself to the best of her ability. This was my first time seeing Zagatova. Color me impressed with her dance and musical abilities.

I really enjoyed Mihara's free music. She skated to orchestrations from the Mission that I've never heard before and she performed to the music with such elan. This was the first time I have been moved by her skating.

Maybe P/C don't do Latin as well as V/M, but IMO their FD is superior to V/M's Moulin Rouge.

I have to respectfully disagree on this, Bumphy. I am not a big fan of this year's SD rhythms, and I must say that only a very few couples (and far between) in history of skating have made latin rhythms interesting for my personal taste. That said, V/M SD is in my book a tad more interesting than that of PapCiz from a composition and interpretation point of view. Regarding the FD, I find V/M fantastic skaters and the first time I saw their FD I thought that there would be no competition - but then I saw PapCiz and I would have their FD at par with V/M's, if not above.

We can discuss on whether V/M bring some more maturity to their skating than PapCiz (especially Pap), but in terms of skating I find Cizeron superior to Moir (or to any other male skater at the moment). In terms of PCS, I would be hard pressed in choosing one of the team above the other. If I look at some technical elements, my preference would go to PapCiz (twizzles, rotational lift, dance spin, for example). I think it will come down to how they will perform on the night of the competition.

For sure, the stage is set for an exciting dance battle!

Agreed on that. And I was happy to see Radionova skate as well as she did, with her technique coming back to where it should be -and no, I ma not crazy about her 3Z  -. I would have a technically sound, mature, interpretative Radionova over a boring (to my taste), albeit technically superior, Medvedeva any given day. Zagitova is a wonderful prospect for the future. I hope she will survive the puberty monster in a healthier way than JuLip did.

Can't warm up to Radionova's skating. The child just flails. Watching her skate is like nails on a chalkboard.

Now, Sotskova? Night and day. She's light and delicate and etheral, lovely to watch, without Medvedeva's sometimes mechanical quality. She's my favorite of the Russian ladies, though I have soft spot for poor Anna Pogorilaya. So sad to be 19 and chased off the scene by the prepubescent jumpers, but that seems to be how Russian ladies' skating is going these days ...

I like Sotskova, too, the most of all the Russian ladies because of her elegant style. I don't think I will ever like Zagitova much because of her bent-over posture which will probably get worse as she matures.

Radionova has always had suspect technique and she has posture problems, too. But what I've always liked about her is her expressiveness.

I did think Mihara should have won bronze at CoC rather than Radionova. Mihara's FS was squeaky clean and quite touching.

I wonder how much of Radionova's perceived posture problems has to do with the fact that the poor girl has no neck. Once I realized this, I started feeling sorry for her. That has to be the reason for her hair styles.

You raise interesting points. It is funny what you say about Sotskova: I fully recon all you say, but she does not move me in the least. Beautiful, ethereal, elegant. For my taste, also not expressive at all. I confess I still have to see her this season, so maybe (hopefully) I will change my opinion. I also have a soft spot for Pogo, who is in fact my favourite Russian at the moment. Too bad inconsistencies and injuries have been plaguing her. She is the one that brought some of the most interesting programs to the arena, in my book.

As for the Russian strategy of having yet the next girl skating in the ladies division, it comes down again to the CoP not being applied properly. Were the junior skaters marked as junior skaters, the problem would solve by itself. And we would have real seniors in the competition.

Agreed, it will be an amazing dance event.

I love V/M so much that I admit that I can easily lose all objectivity. (Hey, at least I admit it!) But I would be curious to see them both live to assess their ice coverage and attack from a better vantage. That's very difficult to glean over the tv. In particular the pattern and the side-by-side non-touching footwork in the SD; I'm not sure that P/C get the same ice coverage as V/M. And V/M match better in their lines, IMO.

As for the FD, my main issue with P/C is that it is the same that we've seen from them in past years. It's beautiful, but we've seen it before; I wish they had tried something new.

I could watch Guillaume Cizeron skate all day. He is insanely gorgeous.

I enjoyed Radionova the most during the 2014-2015 season. She had a bit of a growth spurt then, but it was just enough to make her presence look more mature and to provide her with more strength in her glide. I also really liked her Rachmaninoff FS back then as opposed to that God-awful Titanic theme she skated with in 2015-2016.

She's continued growing steadily. Last season especially, her body has really blossomed to be more womanly and it's really wreaked some havoc on her jumps and her stroking looks a little more labored than it was back then. And, yes, her posture looks more awkward as well. Her competitive spirit is still very much there, so that'll bode very well for her as she continues to adjust w/her new body in competition. Very much like Max Aaron among the US men, Radionova's bronze medal here keeps her in the game for the Russian ladies' Olympic Team, but needless to say it's gonna be a tough battle at Russian Nationals.

Radionova's posture problem has been due more to her hunching her shoulders before she jumps, but she seems to have been working a bit on that and she does that less. Yes, she does have a very short neck. The hairstyles do help there, but most of all, the costumes of late have been the biggest help. Her FS costume (the red one) is not only beautiful, but it is all illusion from the shoulders on up, which keeps attention away from her neck.

She had some cringeworthy costumes in her earlier years, with lots of sparkles and spangles around her face, making it look as if her head was sitting directly on her shoulders!
