Weaver/Poje are going back to their “Je suis malade “ program from 2012. At least, that’s what they are practicing for Skate Canada.

I think this is a great call for them. TThey need to go for it, and if a program that is comfortable—and easily their most popular—brings them some momentum, then I say go for it. I'm generally not a fan of recycled programs but I think this is an exception.

chuckie, is it a requirement for the GP comps that a judge from the host country sits on the panel?

Not sure it's a requirement, but it would be unusual if a GP judging panel didn't have a host country judge.

Re: GP #2 SKATE CANADA INTL 2017 10/27-28 Regina SAS

Postby Jonas » Sat Oct 28, 2017 5:22 am

Interesting start thusfar!

MEN:
Aside from the brainfart fall, Keegan Messing was an absolute delight. Quad-triple was Just! He's my sentimental favorite to win CAN's second Olympic berth.

Michal Brezina FINALLY nailed that 4Sal after a couple years' absence. Well done.

Alexander Samarin is the third RUS man to attempt, but first to land a quad Lutz during this Grand Prix series. However, he doesn't have anywhere near the polish of his countryman Kolyada.

What I find most intriguing is that quadless Jason Brown is less than 4 points shy of Patrick Chan -- and mind you Jason wasn't even perfect here himself.

PAIRS:
Had Meagan Duhamel NOT doubled that sbs Lutz, she & Radford probably would've been close to tied w/Savchenko & Massot.

Speaking of Bruno Massot -- is it true he hasn't gotten his German citizenship yet?!?!

I actually would've had James & Cipres in 2nd here. Great to see them carry their momentum from earlier this year to this Olympic season. If they can manage to beat Duhamel & Radford again, I'd say FRA has a bona fide medal contender in Pyeongchang.

With the top 3 so close, it's gonna be a great finale!

LADIES:
Actually watched this just now even though it was the 1st event.

This was by far Courtney Hicks's best SP in a senior international event and she very shockingly, but very deservedly came out as the top American here. Save on the combo aside, Courtney looked so controlled out there. Rohene Ward did a commendable job w/this program. I'm hoping she can keep it together for the FS.

The two US Champs who skated later were just hot messes out there. Karen Chen continues to be unreliable. Ashley Wagner's attempt to be the entertainer just couldn't hide the very visible technical flaws here. I remember very well when she debuted this SP at Skate Canada '15. In that debut, I said that she needed to put a little more stank in the performance, but the technical elements were about as strong as they've ever been for her at that point. Wagner hasn't broken 70 points in the SP since Boston '16.

Marin Honda looked nervous and anxious throughout, while Rika Hongo looked really hungry. Small victory for Rika over Marin here, though I'd say Higuchi and Kaori Sakamoto had much stronger SPs last week.

Laurine LeCavalier seems to have really benefitted from her move to Kori Ade. She looks much more controlled out there.

Anna Pogorilaya continues to be my favorite among the Russian ladies. Good to see her perform well here after the reported injury over the summer.

Saved the best for last: Kaetlyn smoked the rest of the field here. Her real competition was Medvedeva from Rostelecom last week! I'd say they're about even in the SP!

Your thoughts...
Jonas

Wow what a fierce battle for silver between Weaver/Poje and and Hubbell/Donohue!

Even though they took bronze, H&D will sure be pleased to get personal best scores in the free dance and overall score, by a whopping 5 and 9 points respectively!

Interesting how the ladies event turned out!

Marin Honda kicked it off with a whistle clean performance complete with poise and charm. The two carrots she got were harsh, IMO. I woulda had that in the low 130s -- and looking back hers, to me, was the free skate of the evening.

Ashley Wagner, in comparison, looked cautious and unsure. By now this program should fit like a glove. Her bronze medal here was simply a stroke of luck in the sense that others who followed her either received more carrots (Hongo, Chen) or just imploded (Pogo), and not because Wagner skated w/war paint on as she has in the past.

Karen Chen was smart to scrap the "Carmen" FS. This new one suits her very well. Chen's basics are stronger than Wagner's, but Chen lost A LOT of points on the jumps here and is just as prone to carrots as Wagner is.

Had Courtney Hicks nailed one of her triple-triples she would've beaten Ashley in the FS and stole the bronze medal here, which would've been huge for her. Unlike the likely candidates for the US Olympic Team, Hicks doesn't have the luxury of another Grand Prix. Nonetheless, it was good for her to beat Karen Chen decisively here. This program really works for her, so I'm hoping she can clean the rest of it up before San Jose.

Anna Pogorilaya has had some epic meltdowns before, but in those instances she was fighting. Here, she was clearly still feeling the effects of her back injury.

WOW, that pairs FS was pretty epic.

James & Cipres opened the second group with a killer performance. I dunno what button John Zimmerman and Silvia Fontana hit, but everything is just clicking with this team -- and what perfect timing too!

Duhamel & Radford responded in kind with a performance that reminded everyone why they're two-time World Champs -- attack, attack, attack. Throw 4Salchow -- boom! IIRC, this FS was recycled from '14-'15, but it works so...

When Savchenko opened up the throw Axel to a double, I knew the Canadians had the title. With Massot popping both sbs triple attempts, I hoped that the judges would dock them enough to fall behind the French overall.

It's not even Halloween yet, but all three of these teams put out some scary good performances this week! All Olympic medal worthy!

My overall thoughts on SC:

Ladies: I am glad to see that the judges are getting tough on edge calls, not just with one or two skaters, but with all of the skaters. It has been a problem for a long time and, in my opinion, it's enabled by the fact that we are putting so much pressure on young, undeveloped girls to turn all of these rotations. They do, and then their bodies grow, as bodies do, and they can't turn the jumps anymore. It's no accident that, with only a few exceptions, skaters who rarely or never struggle with this are older (Osmond, for one). We have seen so many young skaters burn out early and I believe this is why. Perhaps the attention to this in the scores will help correct this problem.

I felt just horrible for Anna P, who is clearly not competition ready. It's reminding me a bit of what happened to Gracie and I hope this isn't another horrible worlds experience that she can't put behind her. I hear she is still struggling with back issues which must be so frustrating. Here's hoping she gets the help she needs to get better and back in form so that she can look back on her Olympic season with pride. Not a huge fan of her skating but a huge fan of her tenacity...here's a chance to use it.

I know there were many rumblings about Osmond being overscored in the short which quite simply confuse me. She was far and away better than the competition here, with more complex programs and better jumps. Her short is the best in the world, IMO, performed with speed and attack. Now all she needs is to develop her consistency in the long and she has a shot at Gold.

Not a lot else moved me, apart from Marin Honda who is just LOVELY and was underscored in the long for sure.

DANCE: I would have had H/D in second. They are by far my favourite of the American teams and I even prefer them to P/C. Such power, deep edges, and sophisticated styling.

I'm happy to see W/P gain momentum here and the choice to go back to Je Suis Malade really paid off. But they are still a bit tentative to me; I hope that improves with more mileage on both their programs.

What more to say about V/M? I wasn't really on board with MR when I first heard they were doing it but it's clear they are the right team to interpret this music in a fresh way. They are just such. good. skaters. Truly in a class by themselves at this point. Will be interesting to see how the French scores stack up after this coming weekend but I don't see them catching V/M, in the short at least. Let's see—the judges and I don't always agree. haha

It isn't the judges who are getting tough on edge calls, it's the tech team. And edge calls have nothing to do with rotation---I think you mean URs, no? Kaetlyn may not be known for URs (tho she did rack up quite a few at CoC last year), but she has been dinged internationally for her (f)lutz, although never in Canada.

IMO the ladies tech teams got a bit carried away with the carrots. While it was easy to see the URs in Wagner's, Craine's, and Chartrand's freeskates, the multiple URs for Sotskova and Honda were headscratchers. The only skater other than Kaetlyn who didn't get multiple URs was Lecavelier, who got just one on her final 2a (hmmm-the TS was French....). Larkyn Austman got only 2 URs, although to my eyes, very few of her jumps were all the way around. And looking at the video of Kaetlyn's FS at icenetwork, Kaetlyn should have gotten a UR on her 2a, as she never got all the way around on that jump before falling. It's all very well and good to be tough on URs, but that toughness has to be applied evenly to all skaters.

Oops, yes, chuckie, I obviously meant the tech team, not the judges and carrots not edge calls(my bad!), but I think my overall point was clear:

Kaetlyn has the strongest technique and rotates her jumps more consistently than any of the other women who were at this competition, and I believe that is because she was allowed to develop her skating in time, not pushed into big triples pre-puberty.

(Though, judges aside, I dare say YOU might be harder on her and every other Canadian, regardless of where the competition is held).

Tuktamysheva was pushed to get triples in her prepubescent days, and she rarely if ever gets URs. Her problem is popping or falling on jumps.
But she was trained by Mishin, not Eteri.

I don't think it is when a skater was trained to do the more complex jumps, but how the skater was trained.

I would submit that Tuktamysheva is an exception. Lipnitskaia is more the rule.

NBC just showed this today in the US. Tara Lapinski made me laugh out loud when she declared Ashley Wagner was the fav to win this event over Katlyn Osmond. She left Terry and Johnny speechless LOL.

NBC had plenty of time to edit out such an "out there" comment!!!
