Jeremy Abbott has retired from Olympic eligible competition, but still skates. He entered Japan Open as the "pro" entrant for Team North America. Joannie Rochette competed at Japan Open for three season, IIRC, after winning her Olympic bronze, and she skated quite well each time!

Oda was Japan's "pro" entrant, but WOW!! He's reportedly planning to retire altogether from the sport after this season, but honestly he can probably vie for Japan's third Olympic spot!

Interesting to see that Medvedeva was only 3rd in the technical score here: countrywoman Zagitova and Mai Mihara have her beaten here. It'll be interesting to see if the PCS gap narrows even a little bit during the Grand Prix.

Your thoughts...

It's easy to see why Medvedeva has lower TES than her rivals. Because her lutz isn't clean, she does only one, and repeats the flip and the 3t. Mihara does two zs, one f and two 3ts. Zagitova does two 3zs and two 3fs and backloads her FS to the nth degree so that all her jumps are in the bonus zone.

Mirai can do 8 triples with the 3a, but even when she lands the 3a she doesn't get full value for it. She then lands one 3f, one 3z, one 3s, two 3lo and two 3t. And she still isn't getting the PCS scores she needs to be competitive with the top skaters because she appears to have zero connection with the music and the audience. Even Karen Chen with her dismal performance got higher CH and IN scores than Mirai.
