Mao held a news conference and announced her retirement. Even though she hasn't skated well the past few years, I will miss her terribly.

I'll miss her too. She was a fine skater and artist. In a way she was Japan's Michelle Kwan. A mutiple national and world champion but star crossed at the Olympics.

I went to 2005 Jr. Worlds just to see her, I was so afraid she'd blow out her hips with the 3A's and never make it to seniors.

Mao had an elegance and a grace few skaters ever achieve. She was etherial. The ocassions when I saw her live were always special. I too will miss her.

Just thought I'd add that Kanako Murakami has reportedly retired as well. She gave a farewell performance at the World Team Trophy.

Just don't get the determination to keep on with the single-minded focus on the 3 axle despite the negative results overall. Her choice though.
