WORLD TEAM TROPHY 2017

WORLD TEAM TROPHY 2017

Postby Maleeva » Thu Apr 06, 2017 11:36 pm

Well based on the entries below, I'd say Russia is the heavy, heavy favorite to win this event. Looks like they got all of their top skaters to agree to skate this post-worlds event.

According to the rules, the country HAS to send its top ranking skaters/pair per discipline.
The top team or skater can refuse to participate only due to illness or injury, isn't that so?

In theory, but the ISU has never sanctioned a skater for skipping this event - given that it comes at the end of the season most skaters have a little nagging injury or two if they really don't want to go.

Yes, seems to me that is a poorly enforced rule.

Virtue and Moir aren't here, for example, and I haven't heard of any injuries.

I was sort of hoping that Hubbell and Donahue would go if for no other reason than to get the monkey off their back from worlds. I'm worried about a Gracie Gold-style slump after their big disappointment in Helsinki...

Vrtue & Moir are contractually obligated to the Canadian Stars on Ice Tour, as are D&R (Radford is also injured), I&M, and Kaitlyn Osmond.

The Russians should win Ladies and Pairs, but won't do well in Men, and they might not win Ice Dance.

I don't get this event. 8)

It happens way after Worlds which is supposed to be the grand finale of the seasons and comes at a time when skater and fans are looking towards the summer and next year (skating wise). :!:

I like the idea of having a team event in conjunction with the Olys or Worlds, thus giving more skaters a chance at a medal. :D It saves cost because everyone is already there in the same venue and adds a little something more to the annual event. :D

Combined - great :D
On its own - not so much :?

Just IMO

Any word on how this will affect Nathan Chen's LP? If his boots are breaking down, what quads will be affected? Given his injuries last season, I would hate to see him seriously hurt himself on a basically meaningless event after the season ends.

Nathan had boot problems at worlds so I was hoping they would be fixed by now. I bet it keeps him from doing quad lutz today.

Boy was I wrong about Russia being the heavy favorite to win. I forgot it is really the team that has the four best singles skaters that has the best chance to win. Well done for Japan!

And wow. Medved received perfect 10s across the board for PCS Performance. I don't think I have ever seen that before. Her skating does reach me emotionally like it does other fans, but I am in awe of her consistency and what a competitor she is-the rest of the ladies have so much to do-to ever catch up with her.

Looks as if Karen Chen can skate well only with new boots. With any wear, she can't seem to do the pick jumps. NOT a good sign. She can't get new boots for every competition....

Mai Mihara is sure establishing herself as one of the elite skaters for next season. She won't be getting the low newbie PCS scores she got in the GP this year. And Wikaba Higuchi at last has asserted herself in elite company. I just hope it isn't because she was on home ice, and that this is the way she will skate from now on.

Whatever has happened to Alaine Chartrand? So many URs.....

It was great to see James/Cipres skate so well and win both segments of the team competition. IMO, they had the most original programs of all the teams this season.

BTW, the WTT counted for SB scores. Here are the competitors who achieved new SB Total scores at WTT:

279.41 Mikhail KOLYADA RUS
273.67 Jason BROWN USA
239.39 Chafik BESSEGHIER FRA
190.56 Tangxu LI CHN

241.31 Evgenia MEDVEDEVA RUS
218.27 Mai MIHARA JPN
216.71 Wakaba HIGUCHI JPN
214.15 Gabrielle DALEMAN CAN
209.29 Elena RADIONOVA RUS
204.01 Ashley WAGNER USA
188.06 Zijun LI CHN
179.42 Xiangning LI CHN

222.59 Vanessa JAMES / Morgan CIPRES FRA
204.49 Cheng PENG / Yang JIN CHN
199.65 Kirsten MOORE-TOWERS / Michael MARINARO CAN

190.56 Kaitlin WEAVER / Andrew POJE CAN
189.01 Madison CHOCK / Evan BATES USA
158.36 Shiyue WANG / Xinyu LIU CHN (now in top 24 on SB list)
156.45 Kana MURAMOTO / Chris REED JPN
154.36 Marie-Jade LAURIAULT / Romain LE GAC FRA

Just watched the final day of skating on NBCSN.

I agree Chuckie that James/Cipres also had my favorite Pairs prgrams this season. So glad they finished the year winning this event. I sure hope they are contenders at the Olympics.

Both Japanese ladies were awesome here but at this point I think I prefer the PCS of Higuchi over Mihara. Both have effortless jumps.

Ashley should have beaten Radionova here. The fact that a sloppy Radionova beat a cleaner "looking" program by Ashley, demonstrates how much Ashley has fallen in the eyes of ISU tech panels and judges. Ashley really needs to increase her GOE on all of her elements. Low GOE marks are really hurting her overall score. Ashely will have to quickly gain back the confidence of the judges eraly in the 17/18 season, to have a chance at the Olympic podium.

It was good to see Ashley close out this season with her strongest performances, but frankly these performances needed to be put out in November. To have better solidified her Olympic medal chances, she really needed to carry the momentum from her World silver medal. She did start off really well at Japan Open, but has really been mediocre for the rest of the season. As a result, she finds herself needing to claw herself back up the rankings. I saw her skating cautiously and the habitual two-foots and carrots within her jumps started appearing more regularly. 3flip-3toe should be money for Ashley now, but she's struggled with getting full credit for it this season. She's leaving points off the table with her spin levels and her programs, as entertaining as they may be, lack the complexity needed to rack up the PCS points -- which is what Ashley should be using to her advantage. At World Team Trophy she simply looked slower than the rest of the ladies in the top group.

I see the World Team Trophy as the ISU's new Cheesefest!! The cheesy cheerleader antics in the Kiss & Cry make me roll my eyes  , but the ISU seems to hold the event with some esteem. Plus it gives skaters the opportunity to redeem themselves after a disappointing Worlds and/or earn a Season's Best score and, equally importantly, the participating skaters reportedly bank a decent coin so...
