Alexa Scimeca & Chris Knierim have withdrawn from the Championship Pairs citing lack of training time. They've been out of competition all season this season. Ashley Cain & Tim Leduc could very well win the US title in their first try as a team!

Nah, IMO Haven DENNEY / Brandon FRAZIER will probably win the Pairs Championship. They were impressive in the GP and should have gone to the GPF if they were not unfairly (but predictably) placed behind I/M at SC.

Denney & Frazier, IMO, have the strongest pairs skills and skate with the most "oneness" among the American teams, so I won't disagree that they'll be the favorites in Kansas City. Cain & Leduc, however, take full advantage of their prior singles jumping skills by offering the most ambitions side by side jumps: 3loop and 2Axel+1Loop+3Salchow!! Cain & Leduc hit them quite well at Golden Spin and I think that they'll turn some heads in KC if they skate a similar performance.

These predictions are pretty predictable but I think Hubbell and Donohue will pass Chock and Bates:

Good lord! Now Jason will skate in Kansas City with an injury!

Jason doesn't need the quad to place well at Nationals, and he will have plenty of time to heal up before Worlds. I just hope Nathan steers clear of the gala this time......

I don't get those predictions for Ross Miner / Grant Hochstein on the podium. I like both of them, but they have been just awful this season and I could see Andrew Torgashev and/or Tim Dolensky finishing ahead of both of them.

I think the top 3 will be some combination of Nathan Chen, Jason Brown, and Max Aaron. Obviously, top 2 go to Helsinki. Here's my take on them:

Hard to disagree with Nathan Chen being the favorite to win in Kansas City. His layout includes 4-5 quads including both 4Lutz AND 4flip -- huge point getters!! His spins, footwork, and musical interpretation are good enough; his ice coverage is decent; and his speed is well sustained throughout, which is even more impressive given he has at least 4 quads planned. So all in all he's got a complete enough package to win, plus, and probably most importantly, he's got the ability to execute most of his planned content consistently. I can't see how anyone can really catch Chen mathematically, so I'd bet on him winning and positioning himself solidly as a World medal contender!

If Jason Brown is not dealing with a nagging injury, I'd solidly have in 2nd and on the World Team w/Chen. He's a good, steady competitor and, as we've seen, he can milk points from every little movement. He's finally proven that he can stand up a clean, one-footed quad in competition. This injury changes things. If his lone quad attempt is left out, he puts himself at an additional points disadvantage that I don't think his PCS can make up for.

Max Aaron has a new SP, is adding a third quad (4toe) to his FS, and is reportedly recovered from a previously undisclosed injury during the Grand Prix. Even when he was injured he still was able to land at least one clean quad in both Grand Prix events. Like it or not, fair or not, Max can be exciting to watch when he's on -- and he, accordingly, scores well.

I concur w/Chuckie somewhat that the pewter medal is more wide open to a youngster. Grant Hochstein, unfortunately, lost all of his momentum gained from his top 10 Worlds finish. Ross Miner, in my frank opinion, is done. Tim Dolensky and Alexander Johnson have been equally forgettable. I predict Vincent Zhou will nab that pewter medal.

Jonas, I agree that Vincent is best poised to finish on the podium. I do think Torgashev (who is still recovering from injury) will be a podium contender next year. Things being as they are, it is possible for Dolensky to pass both Miner and Hochstein in the standings. Tim did better in his internationals than they did.

Interesting article about Gracie going back with her old coach to train for the past month. But will that be enough to help her challenge Ashley next week at nationals?

Gracie doesn't have to challenge Ashley---she just has to finish top 3 and continue to get herself in 100% shape in time for Worlds.

The 4th place Intermediate lady, Emily Zhang, scored 83.58 for this FS: 2a, 3z+2t, 3lo+2lo, 3lo, 3s+1lo+3s, 3f
The score includes 5 bonus points (1point for each initial 2a and triple landed)

She would have won the competition had she not popped the 3f in her SP (planned: 2a, 3z+2t, 3f) She landed the 3z combo but got 0 for the 1f.

IMO, the bonus should be reduced to somewhere around 0.5 to 0.75 for triples called with carrots. While I appreciate the USFSA's efforts to reward novices to start putting triples out in competition, I also think that these coaches should hone their skaters in on fully rotating their jumps.

Skate Canada gives bonuses to <, !, ↓ and e, but not to << . However, SC doesn't take points off for falls, while USFS takes off 0.5 per fall

Skate Canada does not give bonuses to <. All jumps must be fully rotated for the bonus in Canada. They will give the bonus for a fully rotated jump with a fall or edge call.

The main differences between Canada and the US are the following.

US gives bonus for the first time a specific triple is completed. There is no bonus in the US for a repeated triple. SC will count the repeated triple.

Skate Canada only gives bonuses for triple loop and harder in novice men. All triples get bonus in novice ladies in Canada.

Skate Canada also gives a bonus for combos where the second jump is a triple.

The other thing is that 3 jump combos are not allowed in Canada novice and lower. In Skate Detroit 2015 Gogolev did a 3F-1R-3S combo in novice men. He could not even attempt that combo in a novice mens competition in Canada.

Falls at novice and below have a 0.5 penalty in US . No penalty for falls on jumps in Canada; just the -GOE.
