Since I've commented on the depth of ladies' talent in Russian, I figured it'd only be fair that I do the same regarding the depth of ladies' talent in Japan.

Mao Asada, who's been struggling w/injury, actually put forth what I thought was her strongest FS of this season, but still finishes 12th in the segment and overall. Her musicality and ice presence are still there, but she no longer has any cushion against the half dozen young, hungry teenagers on either the technical or component side. The youngsters skate fast, have great jumps, present themselves well, and are just hungry to make a name for herself -- much like Mao when she was just a teenager.

Similarly, Rika Hongo -- a reliable competitor who finished top 6 at the last two Worlds -- found herself passed by. It'll be tough for her to make it out of Japan again, but I don't think she's completely out of the game either. Japan did send Hongo to compete at the World University Games.

IMO, the six ladies headed off to Worlds/Four Continents and to Jr. Worlds are currently Japan's strongest competitors. On any given day I find them all evenly matched and they'll all be age eligible for Pyeongchang!! Miyahara is now Japan's headliner on paper, but I do think both Mai Mihara and Wakaba Higuchi have the goods to challenge her and I hope they do so.

Your thoughts...

It's nice to see the Japanese developing a real competition for both ice dance and pairs - maybe the team medal at the Olympics is having a positive effect of pushing countries to create entries in each discipline.

That is just plain stupid. Hugely inflated scores are no use for anyone.

Unfortunately, they give casual fans of the teams false expectations as to their international scoring potential, so that when these teams compete against other nations these same fans are disappointed in the results, or they think their teams were robbed.

Having said that, I will be interesting to see what kinds of scores will be given to Virtue & Moir on home ice. Or how Chock & Bates will be scored at home.

Canada is pretty generous with scores, too. Look at these 2016 Nationals scores for Weaver / Poje: 191.73 76.20 115.53

Those scores are higher than what V/M scored in Sochi! No wonder they were disappointed with the personal best FD score of 110.18 they got at 2016 Worlds.

With what we have seen so far, is it safe to assume that in Ice Dance, the top 10 at Worlds with have 3 American teams, 3 Canadian, 2 Russian, 1 French and 1 Italian?
Hard to predict the order which will make it more exciting.

I think Weaver/Poje were disappointed with their scores because they didn't skate that well and they admitted to it in an interview on the CBC.

As to myself I've got sick of this carousel of wonder babies. I agree with A.Mishin who calls ISU to increase the age till 17-18 y.o. for transition to senior's level so we can enjoy skaters like Pogo, Tuk, Sotnikova, Lipni a bit longer. Look at Radionova - was an unbeatable baby, once grown she was beaten by superbabies just like her in the past

Radionova has potential as a pro/ show skater. Plenty of talent and charisma.
Have a beautiful day,

Satoko Miyahara is reportedly injured with a stress fracture in her left hip joint requiring 4 weeks' rest. As such Miyahara has withdrawn from Four Continents and the Asian Games. She intends to prepare for Worlds after the rest period. Rika Hongo replaces her at Four Continents; Kaori Sakamoto replaces her at Asian Games.

I would've liked to see Miyahara try to fend off Kaetlyn Osmond for her Four Continents title defense, but I do hope she makes it healthy to Helsinki.
