Piper Gilles lost her balance and seriously blew the twizzles, so they got L2 and -GOE on that element. But G/P were also off on the pattern, getting only L2, and got only L2 on the midline no touch step sequence.

H/D also had a problem on the twizzles and got only L2, but no -GOE. They got only L2 on the Pst. But they got L4 on the pattern and L3 on the no touch step sequence.

Re: TROPHEE DE FRANCE 2016 - 11/11-13 PARIS FRA

Postby Jonas » Fri Nov 11, 2016 9:36 pm

From what I've caught:

PAIRS
Should be a good duel between Savchenko & Massot and Tarasova & Morozov for the gold. I enjoy the more playful, original style of the former, but I'm also a sucker for that classic Russian pair look complete with matching lines and great tracking that the latter has in spades.

MEN
Nice start for Denis Ten after the injury scratch from Skate America. Looks like he's changed coaches to Nikolai Morozov.

Nathan Chen just swished out some quads -- Lutz and flip!! Equally interesting is that he matched Adam Rippon on PCS.

LADIES
Another unfortunate outing for Gracie Gold. I watched her do a beautiful 3Lutz-3toe in warmup, but then proceeded to watch her tighten up in her actual performance. <Sigh> This tango SP is meant to be more fierce than last year's tango SP -- "dirtier" as she even described. However, as seen, this year's version descends flatter when the jumps are off; last year's tango SP was a bit more forgiving, IMO.

Medvedeva's SP here equals YuNa's Olympic SP from Vancouver -- not in my book, but... :?

The surprises were Gabby Daleman and Laurine Lecavelier -- well deserved personal bests for both. I said it after Skate America, but I really love the nuanced highlights in Daleman's SP (as opposed to the ad nauseum Tano jumps Medvedeva uses to milk points). With Daleman going totally clean, you can really appreciate them.

Silly, but costly pop on that flip from Higuchi. She would've been right up in medal position w/Sotskova.

Your thoughts...

I thought Sotskova was underscored, just because this was her first GP event---there was nothing juniorish at all about her performance. Her line and flow were exquisite. Her jump content (3z+3t, 3f, 2a) was harder than Medvedeva (3f+3t, 3lo, 2a) and Daleman (3t+3t, 3z, 2a), she got no -GOE and all her non-jump elements were L4. I felt she was very expressive, but the judges held her PCS and her GOE down---again, probably because she's a GP newbie.

Nathan Chen's performance was on a different level from the last time he did this SP. This was the Nathan I remember from his Novice and Junior days, when he was all about the character as well as the jumps. If he keeps up this kind of development, the top guys had better look out!

G & G have really taken over dance. Their pcs sores here are amazing. I cannot wait to see how the judges compare them to V & M when they finally skate against each other.

Madison and Zach will not have liked being beaten in the short by Elena and Ruslan. I don't think they have lost to that team before. The silver and bronze are up for grabs here. Piper and Paul are right in the mix.

I wonder if we will see Gracie in Kansas City? She was just a mess here. Poor thing. I think she has lost her way in skating. Hoping Frank Carrol can somehow rekindle the fire in her belly one day soon.

There's only one possibility that could keep them out of the final:
if WEAVER / POJE beat the SHIBUTANIs at Cup of China next week, giving W/P 11+15 points

JAVI goes on to the FINAL as the top finalist (for now) with 30 points.
Adam RIPPON, with 22 points, is unlikely to make the final. It will be hard for Nathan CHEN to make the final going into NHK with just 9 points, facing HANYU and BROWN, who both have 13 points.
Denis TEN was the spoiler in the event, since he had only one event (he withdrew from SA).

Medvedeva becomes the first lady to make the final. Quelle surprise!

Gaby Daleman was devastated not to make the podium. It is SO hard to be the last skater!

BTW, as usual, I stepped away from the computer while Medved skated, as I didn't want to hear the sound effects from her FS. How did the Paris crowd react to her FS?

Look at the judging panel listed for Ice Dance and it shouldn't be such a surprise.....

I wonder if we will see Gracie in Kansas City? She was just a mess here. Poor thing. I think she has lost her way in skating. Hoping Frank Carrol can somehow rekindle the fire in her belly one day soon.

I have to wonder if a coaching change is what's needed. Frank is a great coach, but he clearly hasn't been able to help her shake this funk and get her confidence back. Maybe a new voice in her ear would help. What about Brian Orser?

I do hope Gracie can find her fire. She's never been my favorite, but a strong Gracie motivates Ashley to skate better, so having her skating well is good for American ladies' skating in general.

If she can rekindle her passion and the right music and choreography, I think she could be unbeatable.

Whew, long afternoon of skating!

PAIRS
Medals went to the right teams. Honestly, I thought Morgan & Cipres were the most compelling. Among the throw quads and throw 3Axels and quad twist attempts, I'm wondering whether any of these teams can truly even execute these in practice. Nothing even close in competition.

Looking ahead Seguin & Bilodeau look like they still have a slim chance at making the Final.

MEN
Fernandez did enough to win and qualify.
Kudos to Adam Rippon for that clean 4toe!! Fully rotated and positive grade of execution!! All elements interwoven in a thoughtfully constructed and executed program! Time to add 4toe in the short!
I'm most curious and excited to see what Nikolai Morozov has up his sleeve w/Denis Ten between now and March in Finland. Clearly, Ten wasn't at 100% here, i.e., watered down jump content and thinking thru choreography, but what he did was pretty good. You can see the quality there.

LADIES
Stark difference between first group, which surprisingly had all of the marquee name veterans, and the second group, none of whom can drink legally in the United States!! Entire first group was all either disasterous or completely lacked fight or both. :(

Can't imagine Gracie Gold NOT being in Kansas City in January, but for her sake she better figure this thing out. I think it's ALL mental and I'm afraid no particular coach can fight whatever demons are running through her head. If it's any consolation, she's definitely going to KC with much lowered expectations.

Over two Grand Prix events Mao Asada has been beaten by two younger, teenaged countrywomen equipped with speed, triple jumps, and hunger . I would not be the least surprised if her season, if not her eligible career, ends at Japanese Nationals this December.

Wakaba Higuchi, I just love! Plenty of speed, great ease of movement, and those jumps!! Costly pop on her second 3Lutz though and popping is fast becoming a costly habit for her. She also needs more dynamic musical choices to highlight her strengths. This program is shortselling her.

Interesting to see the two Russians back to back. IMO, I don't see a 8-point gap between Medvedeva and Sotskova in the former's favor. I dunno.

Gabby Daleman let the medal slip and she was not shy about showing her disappointment. Lots of mistakes and her weaknesses really punctuated themselves as a result. She's hungry that's for sure. Nice to see a Canadian lady who's not afraid to admit that she's hungry!!

Your thoughts...

Mao should have hung her skates up after last season. I don't understand why she stays in. Rumor is she has a nagging injury. If that's the case, competing isn't going to heal it, and it seems to be getting worse. If even Gracie's two disaster skates in Paris beat Mao, Mao is in deep trouble.

Maria Sotskova is a lovely, elegant skater. I much prefer her skating to Evgenia's.

I admire Savchenko, will be her supporter at the Olympics.
Ilinikh/Z improved but I agree with Mark Hanretty - Elena sells her programs well to public and judges but does not attach herself to Ruslan - her partner at all ( It's a stark contrast esp with Dubruel's duets who are skating as one for each other

Will be very interesting to see how Victoria and Nikita do at cup of china next week after falling behind Elena and Ruslan in 2015 then passing them in 2016. I agree. Elena needs to improve her emotional connection to Ruslan. They may not have liked each other off ice but on the ice, Elena had that in spades with Nikita.

This is one of the things I spoke about when the two new couples were formed. In my opinion, Ruslan is devoid of any personality (at least at the moment), bar a pale imitation of Kostomarov's demeanor on the ice. Elena is a wonderful actress, but since the times of the black swan she is becoming a caricature of herself if she does not keep it in check.

Nikita was the one with the tech skills. Last year he and Sinitsina started jelling as a couple - and having the stronger skills were the ones who came out on top in the big competitions, when it counted most. I did not have the chance to see these two this year so far, so no further comments on where they are now. On the other hand, the FD of Elena and Ruslan is, to my taste and to put it mildly, bad and almost insulting. One can only hope that they will progress as the season keeps going.
