MEN'S SP:

Nathan Chen wins the SP on the strenght of his technical score -- his jumping passes were more difficult than Hanyu's and Chen executed them more cleanly. Hanyu beats Chen in PCS, which I agree with, but the gap is narrowing, which I also agree with. Chen's SP plays to his strengths and just comes together as a well put together overall package. Well done.

I could've sworn I saw Mikhail Kolyada do a gorgeous 4Lutz in the warmup, but just a solo 3Lutz in the actual SP and fell out of his 4toe AND no combo, so no credit for the attempt. His score would be right up there in the low to mid 90s had the quad combo happened. He has higher PCS than Chen, which I do agree with.

Very well done also to Dmitri Aliev in his Grand Prix debut. Flirting w/90 points with an SP that only includes a solo 4toe.

I'll also say that any worries that the ISU may have about losing "artistry" to a quad jumping contest should be alleviated after watching this event. Good overall skating is still being rewarded by this judging system. For example, Nam Nguyen, even had he landed the 4toe, probably still would've fallen short of Aliev's score. Vassiljevs and Ge were rewarded for quadless, but clean and well performed programs. Grant Hochstein, as slummy as his jumps were, was still given higher PCS than some of the guys that managed quads. That's of course presuming that the judges are marking fairly, and I gotta say, in this case it was.

Your thoughts...

Comments on the Ladies SP:

Kaori Sakamoto skated great and the audience was equally thrilled for her. From a technical standpoint, I think she's equally as strong as her countrywoman Wakaba Higuchi here.

Carolina Kostner followed suit with a sophisticated performance of her own. Her line is unmatched. Because she went clean, I have no issues w/her marks here. It'll be interesting to see if she has planned and can execute enough technical content hold off the Japanese duo here.

Mariah Bell skated a little nervously here, but good fight on the 3Lutz-3toe, albeit visibly underrotated.

Mirai Nagasu: OK...honestly, the first few strokes of her program, it looked like she forgot what element was coming up. Stood up a creditable 3Axel, but then went on to flub the combo and solo 3Lutz. None of her jumping passes received full base value: all carrots. On top of the jump miscues, the performance was once again completely devoid of connection. Sad thing is Mirai looks like she's in great shape and is very determined. <<Sigh>>

Medvedeva skated right after Mirai using the same music. Performance was like clockwork as were the scores she received after. Yeah it won here, but 80??

I watched CoR on the Olympic channel and Ryan Bradley commented at the start of the Ladies event that Mirai's 3A could be a great asset----or a major distraction.

Unfortunately, the latter proved to be true for Mirai. Competition nerves are at full strength at GP events. She seems to be able to handle those nerves much better at Senior Bs and Challenges which have huge fields and fewer top competitors. Pressure will be even greater at Nationals this year, with an Olympic berth at risk. Going for the 3a at Nationals could be just as disastrous as it was at CoR.

I thought the Japanese ladies were great and the caller was unnecessarily picky with Higuchi.

Ryan Bradley is hilarious--the skater is sliding around on his butt and Ryan remarks that the judges are going to review that landing!

They are killing the sport by awarding 100.27 in TSS to Kolyada for such a poor performance. 3 falls and some shaky landings should not be rewarded with such a high score.

The total does seem very high but he did attempt 3 quads including a 4Lz, landed 2 3A's and 4 other triples. He also got level 4 on all his other elements with positive GOE. I don't think the judges are killing the sport.

Can anyone help me understand how one judge could possibly give Medvedeva three 10s for Performance, Composition and Interpretation, when she fell on her 2 Axel?

Doesn't 10 still mean perfect?

Loved Kostner's FS---so elegant and beautifully skated. Higuchi was impressive, too. Glad to see the tech team didn't crush her as they did in the SP. Lizbet T. always looks as if she is trying to get through her program as fast as possible. No wonder she left off all her 3/3s---she didn't allow herself enough time to do them. Medvedeva wasn't quite as perfect as usual, but then it doesn't seem to matter.

IMO, Mirai needs to reconsider that 3a. 3a will not magically zoom her to the top echelon of skaters if she can't get it all the way around in the air and land on one foot. But TES is only half of the equation. Even if she could fully rotate the 3a and all her other jumps, underperforming all her programs with a blank face and no connection to the music won't get her PCS scores out of the mid7s where they have been since 2010.

I do understand that they have marked the attempts. However, in my humbled opinion, the program has a whole should be considered. Having been given the second highest PCS marks makes no sense to me. But I do agree that saying “they are killing the sport” may have been a bit strong. As a figure skating fan for more than 50 years, it just makes me sad that reputation sometimes takes precedence to real performance. :D :D :D

Home ice advantage happens, and it is not killing sport.

Kolyada is the best male skater in Russia, and he got home ice advantage PCS scores. Evgenia got huge scores for her imperfect skate, but after all she has been the worlds best skater for the past 3 years, so why shouldn't she be a tad overscored on home ice? Chan gets overscored on home ice no matter how he skates, and you know Nathan Chen will get much higher PCS scores at Skate America.

It isn't as if Misha Ge had any chance to pass Kolyada for the bronze medal. If you deflated Mikhail's PCS scores to be even with Misha's, Mikhail would still beat Misha on TES---100 to 85, even with -4 off the 100 for falls (96 to 85). By the same token, as wonderful as Kostner's FS was, technically it couldn't compare to Evgenia's, even with the fall.

OTOH, Radionova received no special treatment and was hit with edge calls on both flips as well as with a ur on her 3/3, while Higuchi's FS went unscathed by the tech team.

Come on. You know 10 never meant perfect and you can't be surprised that Medvedeva got those kind of marks in Russia. I'm sure by the Olympics she'll be getting scores close to 170.

I remember commentary back in the days of the 6.0 scores that a fall which does not affect the flow of the program or reflect an inability to perform the element might be overlooked by the judges when figuring the second mark.

Also, so long as the podium results are correct, does it really matter? Re: the Russian men, it occurred to me that the judges were trying to promote one skater over the other. I don't particularly care which Russian male skater dominates in their nationals. (I would, of course, be delighted if Evgenia somehow manages to piss off her federation!)

RE: Mikhail Kolyada -- With three different quads planned (Lutz, Salchow, and toe), his starting base value is pretty high up there. Looking at the Grades of Execution, he hedges some of the lost points from the falls with some good positive grades on some of the other elements: 4toe-3toe in the bonus and the choreographic sequence in particular.

I think I'm in the minority here, but I really enjoy this guy's skating and dare I say that if he can nail his planned content, I think he can spoil that podium party in Pyeongchang. (BTW, right now I predict the men's podium to consist of Hanyu, Chen, and Uno in any order.) His jumps, when he lands them have an effortless, swishy quality. Rotations are completed in the air and many don't have as much set up as Nathan Chen's does. I also agree that his PCS should, at the very least, be in line w/Chen's.

All in all I think the judges got the men's event just right.

I only caught the final group of ladies FS, but I'd say the results were correct there too. Wakaba Higuchi was the highlight for me. She is putting forth additional effort in improving her "artistry." I think she's definitely paying more attention to the music and this program plays to her strengths, I think, and not tempers them as we've seen w/many a powerhouse ladies' skater. I would love to see both Wakaba and Kaori Sakamoto add 3Axels later in the season!

Jonas, I like Kolyada, too. Obviously he has a long way to go to compete with the really top skaters, but he has potential. I also like his program. But it always tickles me to hear about "planned" content when trying to justify inflated scoring.

I'm not trying to justify Kolyada's "inflated" score; I'm simply referencing his scorecard. The system is what it is -- it assigns base values for various elements and Kolyada's planned content is up there, so his starting base value is pretty high. He rightfully lost 10+ points on the technical side plus another 4 points in program components for the three falls he had, but the other elements that he did very well got decent positive grades.

Believe me, I totally understand people's gripes because, yes, many times this Code of Points system often does not reward programs that are as a whole greater than the sum of its parts. In other words, skaters are often rewarded when they can amass larger sums of points for disparately well executed elements/components over a well executed all-around program!
